Can You Eat Romain Lettuce When Its Little

Help! Frozen Romain Lettuce, is it still good to eat?

let it sit on a less cold shelf for a while to defrost. then rinse it under cold water. the water should help to revive it. it won't be as good as if it was never frozen though...depending on how long it was frozen for, it might be pretty gross, but give the thawing/rinsing a try.

it shouldn't hurt you any to eat it, btw...just might not be very good at all.

(oh and also, concerning your fridge...some have really bad circulation. try getting a thermometer, they have ones in the cooking aisle, and putting it on the different shelves to check the actual temp. you probably do need to adjust it, but be careful that you don't put it too high. at my old apartment, the fridge and freezer only had one adjustment, and if we made the fridge less cold, the freezer would not be cold enough to actually freeze the food--very unsafe.)

Iceberg lettuce to romaine lettuce?

Variety is a better option. A container of mixed spring greens and a head of lettuce cost near the same.

But, as for changing over the diet, mix them. Start with mostly iceberg and a bit of romaine. Over the next few days, use a little less iceberg and a little more romaine. Continue this until you're not using any iceberg.

You can do the same thing with mixed greens too. A little of the mix with mostly iceberg, and the slow conversion to a complete mix.

How do you harvest romaine lettuce?

It depends on your goal. If you want the whole stalk, let it grow up to the desired height and cut if off or pull it up. If you leave about an inch of plant above ground and don’t disturb the root, you will probably see the plant grow back. It may be worth it or not depending on the heat of the sun and the wetness of the soil. All lettuces prefer cool weather and become bitter or die off from the heat mid-summer. You can extend the season by providing shade and watering a bit more.If you want a more or less continual harvest, snip or break off the outer leaves when they are 4–6″ high for the best flavor, leaving the center. However, the center can bolt up in as little as a day. Once it bolts, the entire plant becomes bitter, so cut that center down close the second you see it start to grow upward. But like most lettuces, you can replant every two weeks for a continually new crop. (Other than that mid-summer die-off common to most locations.)

How can you season purple romaine lettuce?

Plain lettuce can be difficult to season. Dry herbs or spices tend to fall off and end up on the bottom of your salad bowl.If you are using a salad dressing, that is all the seasoning you need. Or whisk a little olive oil and your favorite vinegar together. Add your seasonings, and whisk a little more. Your seasonings will travel along in the oil/vinegar emulsion, and will coat your lettuce well.If you are not using salad dressing, I would use sprigs of fresh herbs. It will mix among the pieces of lettuce, but will not settle on the bottom. And if they do, you can just scoop them up with your next forkful of lettuce.

How do I feed my goldfish Romaine Lettuce?

Hi, I have 3 Oranda Goldfish and since they don't have teeth I'm wondering how they will eat the lettuce. They are under an inch long. I feed them peas because they are very healthy for them but I have some romaine lettuce in the fridge. I've read I microwave or boil it to get soft, then put in the tank and they will eat it. But the fish don't have teeth so would I have to feed they tiny little pieces? Or if I put it in there would they tear pieces off. Thanks

Is romaine lettuce bad for guinea pigs?

to Victoria:
i'm not starving my guinea pigs, so please don't assume that i am. as i said, my pigs are only 4 months old, so i'm giving them about half of what they'll eat when they're full grown. also for you, it sounds like your feeding your guinea pigs a little TOO MUCH. that many veggies is a lot for a little guinea pig.

along with fresh veggies everyday my guinea pigs also always have pellets, plenty of alfalfa and timothy hay (alfalfa because they are still under 6 months) and fresh water. they are always eating. so once again, please don't say that i'm starving my guinea pigs.

thank you.

Why do the E. coli outbreaks always seem to affect romaine lettuce and not any other lettuce?

Well….I will tell you what I know/think/have seen: I am from Arizona, and grew up with miles of veggie fields, but NOT Romaine. I also lived in CA for five years, and had a family member in the produce business.People work in the fields, harvesting these crops. Sometimes there is a porta-potty outhouse, many times there is not. People stay in those fields FOR MANY HOURS. Heads of lettuce are tight, and much harder for “stuff” to get inside the inner leaves. Romaine, obviously, is open leaves. So, workers are out there for a long time, Romaine offers SOME cover when squatting to do one's business. You do the math. Also, feedlots filled with animals are nearby, and runoff occurs from the feedlots into the ditches/canals, which carry the water into the produce fields. Again, it's obvious.Growing food is a nasty, dirty business. I planted Romaine last week, here in Virginia. We grow it a little differently, especially because it is early Spring.Grow your own food, or buy hydroponics, or give up lettuce...even then, your safety is not assured.

Why eat lettuce when it is mostly water and is often found to be contaminated with E-Coli?

Vitamin K. It’s an essential nutrient that helps your blood coagulate properly and helps calcium work in your bones. Vitamin K is mostly found in leafy greens like lettuce and spinach. If you don’t get adequate levels, you could experience excessive bleeding from injuries or menstruation and increase your risk of osteoporosis. Vitamin K is what they give babies a shot of before they leave the hospital to reduce bleeding risk in case there’s an accident on the way home.

Is it safe to eat green leaf lettuce that has pink/red and brown/rusty spots throughout it?

In fact all types of lettuce when they get old will have those signs of imperfections on the leaves, ribs even at the bottom of the stem. You can just pinch it off those blackish spots on the leaves, even break off the leaves from those pinkish spots and brownish rusty bottom at the stalks. It is not poisoning but it just gives you the irk that you want to remove it off

Can a bearded dragon eat spinach and romaine lettuce?

Romaine lettuce is not very full of nutrients, Dandelion greens, collard greens, cilantro all make good veggies for them. It's not recommended to feed spinach often as something in it binds calcium and can make it hard for the beardie to digest.
