How do you find the year a book was published?

No. The copyright date is the year the book was copyrighted, but it could have a dozen publication dates - first edition, second edition and so on. The copyright date remains the same.
The publication date should be in the front matter - the first page, that lists the ISBN number, the publisher's name and address, etc.etc. look in the small print.
Actually, I just typed in into google and it was published in 1947. You should be able to confirm that by looking through the front matter.

There are actually five Books of Maccabees. You can find them in English translation here: The five books of Maccabees in English : Cotton, Henry, 1789-1879, [from old catalog] ed. and tr : Free Download & Streaming : Internet ArchiveI MaccabeesThis covers the entire Hasmonean Revolt, which lasted from 175 to 134 BCE. This covers the Maccabees from Mattathias to John Hyrcanus. The story of Hannukah, not including the bit about the oil lasting eight days. Written in Hebrew originally, only the Greek survives to this day.II MaccabeesThis covers events from 180 BCE to 161 BCE. This gives some history before the Revolt, ending with the Jews victorious at the Battle of Adasa. Originally written in Greek.III MaccabeesThis actually has nothing to do with the Hasmoneans, and is set decades before the revolt. There are some parallels between the events in III Maccabees and II Maccabees, which appears to be how a book on the Ptolmaic persecution of Jews came to have a name having everything to do with the Seleucid persecution of Jews. Originally written in Greek.IV MaccabeesMostly a rehash of material covered in I and II, albeit with different theological conclusions drawn. Originally written in Greek.V MaccabeesThis text chronicles the time from 186 BCE to 6 BCE, cribbing liberally from I and II Maccabees, along with the works of Flavius Josephus. Probably originally composed in Hebrew, it now only exists in Arabic

Can you help me find the book I'm talking about?

I remember seeing this book one day and I can't remember the title. It was one of those books you write in, I call them activity books. It had things vs. other things and you had to write why you thought one was better than the other. I'm pretty sure the cover was yellow. Please help me find this book. Thanks.

Can you help me find a book that will make me cry?

and I mean cry in the "oh my god I love life and all the beauty of the world" way. Not the "Jack-from-Titanic-just-died" way, or "I hate the world and my life is darkness" kinda way.
If that's vague: I'm looking for something like an adventure story. Those are the ones that do it for me.

There have been two great stories that i've experienced in my life that I have been so emotionally involved in to the point of emo tears. They are The Lord of the Rings and the Final Fantasy series. I've cried in other stories, but not like these. These are the ones that brought my imagination to a new world--an escape. And the reason they got to me because they had enormous depth. They had characteristics like these:

-Epic stories
-Adventurous plots
-New worlds, strange lands, full spectrum of colors
-Incredibly imaginative, enormous depth
-Elements of good and evil
-Hero/heroes

I do NOT want an allegorical book! (i.e. the author is trying to convince me of a political belief, a social theme, or anything) I prefer Tolkien's idea of "applicability" over allegory, that is: giving the freedom of interpretation to the reader (applicability) rather than the author (allegory). So icksnay on the Golden Compass.

If it goes outside these categories a little bit, it's okay cause I have wiggle room, but I'm looking for something with an overall DEPTH and MAGNITUDE, with characters you can RELATE to, even if you don't know why.
Other stories similar to the ones above: Metal Gear Solid series, Lost... can't think of too many really.

Suggested readings?

(Note that the above stories weren't all books, but I prefer literature)
