Can You Go Into Treatment For Self Harm

Can you go to rehab for self harm?

I live in England and when I was 15 I had been in treatment for 4 years for self harm, unfortunately it can be dealt with on outpatient that is why your counsellor has not mentioned putting you in hospital because it is not considered serious enough unless you are almost killing yourself or trying to kill yourself doing it.

People are put into psychiatric hospitals when they are seriously ill, when they are suicidal or homicidal. Like if they have tried or they have a plan to or if they are psychotic etc.

You say you are having counselling? I think you need more than that. I think you need to see a psychologist so you can you have cognitive behavioural therapy which is used in a lot of patients who self harm. It can really help. Maybe go back to your doctor and tell them the counselling is not working for you. They will be able to help you a lot more than anyone on here can.

Good luck.

I am 100% sure my friend self harmed just now. Should I call the police?

The last thing a person having a mental health crisis needs is police intervention. If you live in the United States, calling the police on someone having a mental health crisis is often one of the worst things you can do. If others around the person in crisis feel they need police presence to ensure their own immediate safety, that’s one thing. But throwing the criminal justice system at a friend’s mental illness has an unsettling way of making things much, much worse. Most Americans know the heartbreak of hearing stories like this. Concerned friends or family call 911, hoping to keep a mentally ill loved one from harming themselves during a suicide scare or other crisis. Police come in, escalate the situation, and end up shooting the person they’re there to save.A 2015 report by TAC (Treatment Advocacy Center, a mental health non-profit) found that untreated mental illness was a factor in a quarter of all fatal police encounters in the U.S.Encourage friends struggling with mental illness and self harm to talk about what’s going on, and to get professional help. If it’s an emergency, where they’ve done significant harm to themselves or plan to, get them to a hospital. Please don’t invite guns into your friend’s mental health crisis. Too many well-meaning people bitterly regret making that call.

Can you be arrested for self-harming?

In America, if the police decide that you are self harming, they have the authority to take you into a hospital with an emergency room. You will then be treated for your injuries and then the psy ward until the doctors determine that you should be released. But you won’t be charged for a crime. If you are thinking about harming yourself, please get help. Call a suicide helpline, go to an ER, talk to your friends, your family, anyone, you need help.

Eating disorder and self harm residential treatment centers in Missouri?

My younger sister recently told me that she starves herself/ throws up her food and cuts her self. She told me that she did in fact want help and mentioned that if she had to get help she would prefer a residential treatment center. We found one we really like, The McCallum Place. However, they only treat eating disorders. Does anyone know of any good treatment centers ?

What are some alternatives to self harm?

Freedom from Self-Harm is a book by two therapists who treat self-harm and research it, Kim Gratz and Alexander Chapman.

The book is divided into 3 parts. Parts 1 and 2 are Understanding Self-Harm and How to Get Help for Self-Harm.

Part 3 is Coping Strategies for Managing Self-Harm. The chapters are

10. Getting motivated to stop self-harm and increasing your chances of success
11. Coping with self-harm urges
12. Managing emotions related to self-harm
13. Moving forward: living a life without self-harm

The authors recommend getting treatment for self-harm. However, they also say that there's a wide range of treatments. Whereas very serious cases require months of intensive therapy, many people benefit from a program called MACT, which is just a booklet and a few therapy sessions, usually two or three, sometimes just the booklet.

They say that outpatient therapy is generally better than inpatient treatment, because when the idea is learning skills for the real world it's best to learn in the real world.

Freedom from Self-Harm has been endorsed by Marsha Linehan, the psychologist who designed DBT, the one treatment shown to help with borderline personality disorder, a mental illness that has self-injurious behavior as a frequent symptom.

If you go to the Amazon and Goodreads ad for this book. you'll see that readers are very enthusiastic about it.

Aviation medical and a history if self-harm?

That is a difficult question to answer because there is no history of clinical diagnosis or treatment for mental problems. On a medical application you are asked if you have any noticeable scars, tattoos or other features, but that mostly for identifying a victim of an accident. However, while your body isn't going to be inspected closely for scars, if any of them are noticeable to a doctor, expect to be asked about them. If he recognizes it for what it is, the medical regulations are very clear on the subject and specifically state that "A personality disorder that is severe enough to have repeatedly manifested itself by overt acts" is an initially disqualifying condition.

What that means is that your application might be initially denied and you would have to undergo additional evaluation. If you have indeed not had any problems for several years you will probably be issued a medical certificate, but it would be a very wise idea to consult an aviation medical consultant BEFORE you go see an aviation medical examiner for a medical certificate. If you don't, you're asking for no end of trouble if your goal is to be a professional pilot. I wouldn't spend any more money on training until this issue is resolved. You really shouldn't have started training without being sure you could finish it unless wasted money is of no concern to you.

There are many aviation medical consultants that can be found by searching the internet. Here is one; http://armaresearch.com/?page_id=6

Good luck.
