Can You Have Sleep Credit

Can you accumulate sleep "credit" the same way you accumulate sleep debt?

Nope. When you are awake ‘adenosine’ builds up in the brain and the amount of ‘glycogen’ drops. In that way Sleep is like cleaning dirty dishes. When you don't sleep, the dirty dishes (adenosine) pile up and the amount of clean dishes (glycogen) goes down. The more you don't sleep, the more those dirty dishes pile up and the number of clean dishes go down. This is a sleep deficit.When you get a decent night's sleep it's like you washed all the dishes. They are all clean and neatly packed away. So sleeping more won't do anything, the dishes are already clean, washing them more doesn't give you any more clean dishes. After a good night's sleep the adenosine has been cleaned out and glycogen has been built back up. Sleeping more won't clean out any more adenosine and build up more glycogen as they are already at the right levels.

Can you get by in life without a credit card?

My father lived his whole life without ever having a credit card, not even a store card. And he owned a home, bought cars, and went on vacations. He got a mortgage and paid it on time, which gave him a good credit score. He bought his cars with installment loans financed through the vehicle company. That’s not enough sleep for you. You need at least 8 hours, so do the extra credit right when you get home.

How can one pay his sleep debt?

By sleeping on a regular schedule and getting proper exercise One CAN repay a sleep dept. When I retired from being s doctor I had been on call to our local hospitsl’s emergency room for specialty care for the previous 2 years 24/7. We lost and never replaced my partner and I just sucked it up and saw all the patients In both clinic and hospital. It reminded me is my surgical residency. I did not know how tired I was until I quit and had a month of decent nights sleep without the inevitable interruptions from the emergency department calling for either consultation or for me to come in to do a nighttime surgery. (I pretty much had to do all emergent surgeries at night because my clinic and elective surgery schedule was so busy during the day.)After I overcame my sleep deprivation my children said I was a different father. They said I laughed and smiled more and was far more patient with them. I do not recommend sleep deprivation to anyone in hindsight. I noticed at our last family reunion that I had physically aged more than all of my siblings even though I am the youngest. It is pure luxury now that I get to turn my phonevringer off and dive into my bed knowing I can just relax and sleep!
