First buy a Standard Dictionary, if you already don’t possess one. Cambridge Learner’s Dictionary is a good choice for Beginners. In addition to the meanings of almost all the commonly used words, in the central pages they have given pictures for common words and devoted another 30 pages for useful information on the usage of Standard English, which I find very useful for anyone interested in learning both the spoken and written aspect of this language.Start reading Comic Books and Cartoon Books where they use simple words but convey the meaning correctly and easily. This will help you to understand the text easily and will greatly improve your confidence.See Cartoon movies, in addition, which will help you to learn simple spoken English.Read English Newspapers, loudly, at least for 15 minutes everyday. Reading loudly will improve your pronunciation. It will also help you identify new words. Whenever and wherever you find new words, immediately refer to the dictionary, learn its meaning and try to form a new sentence using that new word. Keep a record of such new words and the sentences you have formed using those new words, and refer to them frequently to improve your language fluency.Whenever you are alone, try to practise expressing your thoughts in English. Immerse yourself in English culture. Start watching American or any English-speaking soap operas, surround yourself with English speakers, Learn sentence structures and replace words in that sentence with words and keep doing this until you learn how to do this with all types of sentences. Then improve your vocabulary by purchasing an English dictionary and study it like a holy book. Rosetta Stone is nice but expensive. It does the same thing as hanging around fluent English speakers, it gives you a picture and the English way to say it. There is no written translation. It also gives you sentences and how to replace them with other words. Sentence structures. This is how us humans naturally learn our first language, but this can easily be assembled through online work and dedication. This is how everyone learns their first language and the easiest way to do it. Many people, like in third world countries, merely learned English by the mass amount of tourists that spoke English around them. Similar to the Spanish word "Hola" , the French "Bonjour" and the Japanese "Sayounara" we hear so many people say it, but there is never any literal translation, we create our own correct translation by the situations they are used in. Humans do this without even trying, as it is human nature to learn languages like this. I watch Taiwanese dramas, and seeing words i do not recognize, but with visuals i do, i learn the word.
How do I help my friend learn English fast?
Here is a list of things I could think of.Ask her to read books. Let her keep a dictionary by her side and note down all the new words that she has learnt. Also ask her to give you a review of what she has read that day. Use the new words in a sentence each.Watch English movies/series with subtitles. Watch the same movie later with no subtitles. Gradually try watching movies entirely with no subtitles.Write about a random topic each day. You could connect the topic you give today and the one you would give the next week. That way she will learn more about the same topic in detail and will remember for a longer time.Attend spoken English classes locally. Interacting with the local people will naturally build the tone, pronunciation and confidence.Start a blog and write about your progress in it. Start off simple, later on you can improvise. Read other blogs on English speaking and see how others are handling it.Be involved in sites like Quora where you can always learn something new everyday. :)
