Can You Plant Spring Bulbs For Fall Season

Can I plant fall bulbs such as crocus, tulip and gladiola in spring? An injury keeps me from digging and I'd hate for the bulbs to be wasted.

Depends on your local climate. If the ground is unworkable till april, or even may, you might find they have already sprouted and shrivelled up.I would plant them now in containers, and keep the containers in a garage till they start to shoot. The frost can penetrate containers more than the soil, so they need some protection. You don’t need expensive planters if it’s only for one year, knock up a wooden frame, or even use the bags of the growing medium as gro-bags.Then enjoy them, feed the soil after the flowering, let them die back till june, and in the autumn knock them out and plant as per your original plan.

Could I plant spring bulbs (like tulips) in January since we haven't had any real cold weather yet? (I'm in NJ)

Yes, you can plant them aa long as the ground isn't frozen and your clinate is USDA zone 7 or colder, but they will not bloom next spring and will only gove you stunted leaves because they need a certain number of hours of cold during the winter to bloom and January is far too late to meet those hours unless if you live in Canada or Scandavia, in which case the ground would already be too cold. Tulips bulbs are only frost hardy if thry have roots. The spring after that, only a few bulbs will give you very modest and disappointing blooms unless if your climate is like the Netherlands, Eastern Turkey, the Steppe of Centeral Asia, or the Pacific Northwest, with cold long winters, long cool or cold moist springs, and preferably dry summers, and New Jersey is definitely not. Except for some very few kinds, I cannot grow them at all in California even with artificial pre-cooling because the Spring in my area is too warm and quickly turns into summer, and even the Winter days are often warmer than Summer days in Amsterdam.

How long can you store planting bulbs that have not been planted?

I don't know of a limit on how long you can keep bulbs. It really depends on the individual bulb and how it has been treated up to this point. If it has been exposed to dampness it will be more likely to rot. If it has been kept dry overall it will more likely remain viable for the next gowing season. I take an old pair of pantyhose and slide the first bulb down into the foot.Tie a knot. Slide in the next bulb. Tie and knot and continue until you have all of your bulbs stored. Then hang in a cool dry place ( basement or garage ). Next growing season give each bulb a gentle squeeze to make sure they are still fleshy and firm and then plant them.

When do I plant Allium bulbs in Ct - Fall or Spring?

Apparently now's the time to plant Allium for spring bloom, in Connecticut. It's a wild plant, and grows well in your area...watch that you don't plant it where it will be a problem if it spreads, because it becomes invasive easily.

When is the best time to plant your tulip bulbs and winterizing your yard and what do i use?

1. Plant them after the first frost in your area; waiting for the first frost will keep you from planting your tulips too early, leaving them susceptible to rot. If you are too busy to plant them right away, you can plant bulbs up until the ground has frozen solid. Spray the bulbs with an animal repellent prior to planting, or top new plants with chicken wire to keep the squirrels from eating your tulips. Just FYI, most types of tulips are not good rebloomers; they'll put on a great show the first spring, but if you want a repeat performance the following spring, you should either a) dig up the spent tulips after their blooms have played out and then plant new bulbs the following fall or b) buy bulbs that are specifically labeled as SPECIES tulips as they are more reliable rebloomers.
2. I would recommend Scotts® Winterizer™ With PLUS 2® Weed Control. It's available from the box stores - Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart - and you'll pat yourself on the back next spring when you don't have to deal with dandelions and broad-leafed weeds.

If you plant tulip bulbs upside down, will they still sprout?

Yes, the tulip will find a way to turn towards the sun and in most cases they will sprout just fine.

Does it matter what time of year you plant bulbs?

Not really. Cold weather tells the bulb to bloom as fast as possible when warmer weather comes, which is why you you want to plant your flower bulbs just before the coldest time of year, if you want the shortest time from planting to flowering. But planting them earlier doesn't affect their ability to grow, just that you will have to wait longer before it grows a stem.

How many times does tulip bloom in a season from a single bulb?

one tulip bulb ususally produces one plant this plant if it is a new bulb generally produces one flower however it can produce more than one flower and the more mature it gets can produce more flowers-basically year after year it produces more flowers but just from one plant. They only bloom once during the year then you let them die and sleep until next spring where they come out again. Their bloom period lasts a couple of weeks and if the weather is a little cooler they bloom a little longer. Bulbs are great in any garden they multiply with age and they are the first sign of spring with their great color and tulips come in such wonderful colors I hope you just continue to ad more to your garden.

When should you plant tulip bulbs in pots in freezing winter zones(zone 5)?

It's a little hard to answer your question, because you don't say what you're planning to do with the tulips-in-pots - are you planning to force early blooming indoors, or are you planting pots to be displayed outdoors at the normal tulip blooming time?  In either case, you'll want to purchase your bulbs in early fall when they go on sale.  Make sure they're large, fat and firm, no flabby, soft, or loose-skinned bulbs allowed. Before planting, they'll need to be chilled for 12 - 16 weeks, like in your fridg; then plant them in their pots, put the pots in a cool, dark spot (like the basement or garage) and water once a week.  When leaves appear, move them to the light. They should flower in 2-3 weeks after moving to the light. With this information, you can calculate the time table based on when you would like to have flowers. If you're wanting to plant some pots for spring display outdoors, you'll want to plant them in late October or December, then store the containers where they will be chilled, maybe an unheated garage, but not be subject to hard freezing.  They should also be kept in the dark, and watered a bit once a week.  You don't want the soil to be wet, but it should be slightly damp, because the bulbs don't want to get too dry.  Put the containers outdoors in the early spring.
