Best JUMPY horror films?

Me and the girlfriend want to watch a few horror films tonight, but gore isn't really that interesting to us, the jumpy kind are the sort we are after. Does anyone have any suggestions on jumpy films?

Thanks

Joe

What are some horror movies like Dead Silence?

ok, since you are not looking for loads of gore, and most of the suggestions so far contain tons, let me give you some help. I would suggest trying SOME asian horror like The Eye, Ju-On, Ringu, or Dark Water. All great, but with minimal gore. Or The Evil Dead had surprisingly little gore. Umm, basically look for movies made prior to 2003, that seems to be when we started focusing on gore over story here in America.

What's the difference between a horror and thriller film?

A horror movie uses cheap tricks to make the viewer squeamish. Case in point: Saw (I, II & III). You get scared because it would be horrific to see this played out in real life. The horror genre generally uses a lot of gore, blood, guts and pain to make the viewer not want to watch it, while still needing to see how it ends...
A thriller movie is one that makes you sit on the edge of your seat. Mostly, these include homicide movies, like Se7en or What Lies Beneath... things of that nature. Thrillers generally don't capture as much members in the audience as horror movies do because once you've heard about it, it only takes one person to tell you the ending. Once you know the ending (which are usually predictable, anyways), you lose some desire to see it.

Do horror movies need a lot of blood and gore in them to be good?

Definitely not. Some movies are just scary on their own, like Killer Klowns from Outerspace. Although it is more of a comedy, the directors’ intention was to scare. That movie didn’t use much blood or gore. The Ring didn’t use much blood or gore either, just eerie sounds and the fact that some girl was ready to scare the life out of you if you watched her tape.A lot of times it is just the suspense, the building of your heart racing, the creepiness and bizarre. As long as you focus on the psychological, you can really scare a person and make the horror movie scary. Because in my opinion, movies that are over the top gory aren’t scary at all and in fact, are shitty movies like SAW or any of those Horror B-Movies. Although Hostel is good in the fact that it could happen.

Why do people put gore in horror movies for the sake of gore?

The question itself implies you have some pretty firm opinions on when gore is included “just for the sake of gore.” Any semi-serious filmmaker would reply that any blood and guts shown in one of his/her films was shown for a reason, and not for its own sake. Everyone has their “line,” as ever-moving and murky as it necessarily will be, and it’s entirely subjective. You could replace the word “gore” with “sex” or “swearing” if you wanted to. Some in my family are particularly sensitive to both (though, oddly enough, not to gore in certain settings), and tend to react in particular to sex scenes as all being “unnecessary.” For example, the Titanic scene were Jack and Rose finally get busy. To me, it absolutely made sense in the context of the movie, and was not gratuitous at all. No scene is “necessary” . . everything in a movie is a directorial choice . . but this one was close. The sex part itself was not graphic at all, so I guess the objection was to an extended peek at Kate Winslet’s boobs. But this scene keeps some of the more prudish from watching the uncut movie. Note where I went to school; this explains a lot. With violence and gore, same concept. Over-reliance on gore, in my estimation, just gets boring, but some people like and expect it. I say this as someone who has enjoyed some incredibly violent movies that you may find gratuitous. Try Ichi the Killer; it’s a good litmus test. Do the horrible things that happen in that movie serve a purpose beyond making the viewer go “UGGGGGHH!” or not? Who’s to say? I say yes, but then I thought Rambo (2008) was way too violent. Is this a contradiction? Maybe.
