Can You Volunteer At Shops When Your Under 16

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

In most states you must be over 16 to volunteer without a parent, or 14 and over to have any contact with animals. I know because I am 15 and found it extremely difficult to find a place for myself to volunteer, now I am considering joining a local volunteer group in my state. Goodluck! If you can't find a place to volunteer just yet you can always do food or supply drives for animal shelters, which is also much needed when it comes to help. Thank you so much for wanting to help the animals in your community.

Can you volunteer at an auto repair shop?

yes you probably can iof you find one that will take you on as a volunteer however if you are thinking of doing it for community service hours that is not going to work because community service can generally be done only for nonprofits, churches, and government entities, not for profit business.

I'm volunteering in a charity shop and I'm 15, could I get hired at a job now because of experience?

Yes, particularly if you get a letter of recommendation. Good employers care about is if you are a good fit for the job. If you are able to prove you have relevant experience which could help, then bring it on.Best of luck Neal!

Do vets allow teen volunteers?

I'm 15 and I want to become a vet in the future. I was wondering if I could possibly volunteer at a veterinary office or practice and, I don't know, maybe help clean up or be of any assistance. Do vets usually allow this?

I want to volunteer at a dog/animal shelter?

Hi,

I think it's great you want to volunteer at a shelter. More people need to do volunteer work (as do more adults). The best way to get specific information is to check out the website of the shelter you want to volunteer at. Remember, shelters are all different around the country and it's a big country, so even if my local shelter requires you to be 16, your local shelter may have different policies.

Another local shelter accepts 13 year old volunteers IF they have an adult with them. They usually clean cages/litter boxes and work on making or repairing toys. In one local shelter, they can help dog walk as long as the adult holds a second lead attached to the dog.

Good luck!

Edit: Emura, can you provide federal legislation references that state that it's illegal for anyone under 16 to volunteer at a shelter?? Or are you quoting from YOUR local shelter and making generalizations, forgetting that it's a BIG country and that each shelter/rescue group mkaes their own rules?
If you can provide federal statutes, I would love to see them so I can learn something new today and amend my answers. Thanks!

Edit II: So, Emura, it's NOT illegal as you stated. It's based on limited information from a few shelters you've worked with so you generalized and said it was the federal rule for ALL shelters. Ok, thanks for clearing that up.
My experience with shelters is that 16 or 18 is often the minimum age to handle the animals without supervision. Sorry to hear that your local shelter is 14 before they allow ANY volunteer work. Keep googling and maybe you can find another group that needs help, even if it's just filing and putting stamps on letters!

What volunteer work can a 16 year old do at a hospital?

You have to call your local hospitals and ask if they have a volunteer program because some of them don't have one. And there's always lots to do. When I work I manage the front desk with a few friends and it's really fun...as nerdy as that sounds. We just answer phones, deliver things, tell people where to go, and basically anything else patients need. However there are a lot of other jobs too regardless of age (I'm also 16)...like working directly with patients, doing clerical work, helping out in the gift shop or the ER, and so much more depending on the hospital you work at.

Good luck hope I helped:)

Jobs for homeschooled teen?

Very nearly no places will hire anyone under 16, and very few hire under 18 anymore. I know because my 17 year old daughter has tried. At least that is how it is in my area. She had already graduated too. Retail hires 18+. Try the movie theater. Or Starbucks (coffee shops in general). Look at applications online, they usually give age requirements. 15 is usually too young.
You will need a work permit, which you get at your school district, the same as the other students. I know, you are home schooled, but you still get it there.
Why is babysitting not an option? Most young teens start with that. Dog sitting in the summer is good too. Mow lawns? You have to start somewhere. You might be interested in beauty shops, but that will have to wait. Beauty shops carry chemicals and where I am they don't hire under 18. Retail does not have interns.
You could volunteer now, and get references for when you apply for a paying job.
