In order to understand the DOOM story, what Wolfenstein games should I play? Should I play DOOM 3 before the other DOOM games?

The newest game DOOM came out in 2016 but dropped the number at the end (they could have called it DOOM 4 I suppose). It is a good game and you will get full enjoyment out of the game and story without playing any of the previous games. There are some hidden items you can find in the game that are “Easter eggs” for the previous games but don’t really impact the story. Hypothetically you could be the same guy from the end of DOOM 2 but that isn’t certain.DOOM 3 came out in 2004. Story wise, it did not have much to do with DOOM 1 or 2 which came out in 1993 and 1994. DOOM 3 had pretty modern graphics as opposed to the pixel style graphics of DOOM 1 and 2. If you are a younger gamer who has never encountered these old shooters, it might be interesting to try to play them but you probably would not enjoy them very much (obviously that is my opinion but shooters have improved a lot over the last 25 years.) DOOM 3 with its more updated graphics and gameplay would probably be worth going back to if you really want to.Wolfenstein was made by the same developer, id software, but aside from the old games using the same graphic engine, they are unrelated in both story and setting.I love the DOOM games, but if you are looking for an older shooter with a good storyline, I would check out the original Half-Life. Also good but not as good is the original Far Cry.
