Does the computer need to be restarted after defragmenting the hard disk?

No, it isn't necessary to shut down the computer after de-fragmenting the hard drive. The option is there because the process may take longer than you want to be in attendance at your computer so you are given the opportunity to have the computer shut down after the de-fragmentation. This is quite useful if you expect the process to take a long time and you have to be someplace else before the process has completed and you don't want the computer left running.
