Why does my car stereo fade in and out?
There are lots of possibilities here. If you have a newer factory radio or a newer aftermarket radio, chances are you have some bad equipment. However, if the knob is attached to a rheostat/potentiometer (analog knob) the problem could be due to oxidation. To check if you have a digital or analog knob, move the knob up (with the radio off) and see if it has a limit. If it does, chances are it's an analog knob. If it's analog, pull off the knob and spray some contact cleaner down the shaft. Then move the knob back and forth for 60 seconds or so. Allow for a couple minutes of dry time and then test the radio. Repeat this procedure for fade and balance as well. Good luck. (Note: This procedure usually works better with the radio out and vertical so the cleaner can penetrate easier.)
