If my friend's mother is coming from America, to Africa, and has room to bring us 3 board games, which ones should she bring?

I would recommend game systems over specific games.  i.e. sets of components which can be used to play multiple different games.  The most common example would be a deck of playing cards, although there are other systems that are worth looking into that are a little more exotic and/or visually interesting.  Icehouse/Looney Pyramids have a nice library of games written for them, some of which require a few additional components but they are usually easy to improvise.  The number of colors/pyramids required varies from game to game. http://icehousegames.org/wiki/in... Piecepack is another well known game system that has a number of games published.  Some games use both a Piecepack set and Looney pyramids.http://www.piecepack.org/Piecepa... A Sticheln deck has a number of suits and a range of values that allows quite a few other games to be played (again, sometimes requiring some additional components).http://boardgamegeek.com/filepag... It should also be noted that Go, in addition to being a fine game, can also be used as a game system as there are several other games that can be played with a Go board and stones.http://senseis.xmp.net/?OtherGam...

What do people in the Marines do for fun?

Spades for sure just to pass the time and have a little fun. But a true 'Marine Corps way' to pass the time and have some 'real fun'? Needle/irritate/'dig'/annoy/whatever each other incessantly. Bored Marines will pick at each other until they find those buttons you would rather not be pushed.... and then they will push them over and over and over again just to see how far they can take it and what happens when you reach your breaking point ;)Simple example: had a guy I worked with whose first name was Richard... _HATED_ the name Dick.... so what was he called every day at work? It was usually easy and a lot of fun to get him 'spun up'.Some guys are sensitive about their wives... especially if they happen to be pretty. A simple 'Hows your wife and my kids?' could be a good start to an otherwise boring shift. Usually, once initiated,  everyone else on the shift joined in and tagged-teamed them with various insults, insinuations etc. ;)These 'games' rarely led to any kind of serious/physical altercation. The key part of the 'game' was deflection and trying to get attention shifted to someone else. Everyone eventually got their turn 'in the bag'. This is something you could never do in the civilian world, only the fact that you are all essentially family allows for this type of 'fun'. As one of the guys I worked with once remarked: "You should know better than to let a Marine dig under your skin... because he is going to climb in there with a fucking shovel."
