Career Change .is This A Stupid Move Or Am I Right To Want To Drop Out Of School .

A 1.6 GPA... Out of High School. Got serious and want to get a better job but can't because of GPA...Now what?

When people say there are times in life when you need a little insight. Believe me... I NEED ALL OF IT AS I CAN GET!!!

I never liked school. I was good but never really put forth an effort to do well. Heck, I didn't even take the SAT's. But still I squeaked by in graduating with a standard diploma. Now, I'm really starting to crack down and get serious about my life but my academic past and my surprise pathetic 1.6 GPA (Repeat 1.6) is always coming back to haunt me. I'm young, seventeen years old and really need to get on the stick. Is it anyone else's fault I was a total slacker? Hell no. I just need to get it together and I'm feeling the sting from the dumb mistakes I've made. But how can I when my GPA won't even get me into a community college or even the military? I feel stuck and can't live w/ the folks forever.

So is there anyone here who was in the same boat as me and got out of it and is doing well for themselves. If anyone can give me adivice it would be swell

I have decided I want to drop out of college even though I am very close to finishing. My family is concerned I will encounter a lot of trouble progressing in my career but I disagree. What should I do?

Let's say I'm a VC and I hear your great idea that will make the world a better place, earn lots of revenue for investors and give you the reputation of a modern day demigod. But wait, you had 6 MORE MONTHS TO FINISH SOMETHING AND DIDN'T COMPLETE IT??????  How the f*** would I trust someone who doesn't understand the opportunity cost of completing his degree to be in a better place in life.  Why would I invest millions of dollars in your idea if you had a HISTORY OF GIVING UP BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO DO SOMETHING ELSE BEFORE YOU FINISHED????This topic just pissed me off.  I have immigrant parents and they spent A LOT OF MONEY PUTTING ME THROUGH BERKELEY.  This money was about 1/3 of my father's take home pay and I was the first cousin on both sides to go to such a privileged school.  I got two F's while I was going there and was so scared to be such a bad example for my family that I swore off all social life (including potential girlfriends) just to get through school.  I was mentally numb when I graduated but just to hear my Dad tell me how proud he was of me MADE UP FOR ALL THE MENTAL ANGUISH I WENT THROUGH.Now in my advanced age, my CS degree has opened a lot of past and future opportunities.  Google, Salesforce, Facebook and MANY STARTUPS still call me to see if I'm open to new opportunities.  NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I DECIDED TO QUIT AFTER GETTING Fs IN COLLEGE.  If anything, getting an F (or two) taught me to fight to get what I need for my family. It doesn't sound like you have the fight to finish what you started.  Go ahead and quit.  It won't be long before you find out that hard work early in life means an easier life later vs. easy work early in life means a harder life later. Give your parents the respect they deserve and FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED!!!!!

I am considering dropping out of college even though my family is paying for it. Should I?

A few words on pleasing your parents: forget all about it.I find all too often young people who are in your shoes use parents as a way to excuse themselves from the responsibility of figuring out and then doing the things that actually matter to them.To some extent, this isn’t your fault. You’ve been micromanaged all your life by family and teachers. Challenging them can be frightening. It took me a long time to learn that attempting to please others in the short term is a surefire way to disappoint both parties long term.I was talking a girl the other day who recently graduated college. She hated the entire experience and couldn’t be happier to have it over with. When she got her diploma in the mail, her mom was disappointed and saddened by her lack of enthusiasm.“I spent over $200,000 on this education and you don’t care,” she told her. “You wasted my money.”Harsh, but in a sense, she’s right. My friend willingly allowed her parents to spend a bunch of money on something from which she knew she was getting no value. If you stay in school just because you parents are paying for it, you’re doing them a disservice. You’re living a dishonest life and you will pay some consequences for it down the road.My advice to you is to take some time off from school and try something else. You’ll save them the money while you explore your options and if you decide to go back, I’m sure the money will still be on the table.Maybe they’ll even fund an alternative for you?Even if they won’t, I want to leave you with a final thought: money is not the only currency. You need to start seriously valuing your time as well.Ask yourself whether you can afford to spend four years of your life doing something you hate and that you find no value in?Can you afford even another second of putting of your goals?Life is going to pass you by while you’re twirling a pencil under fluorescent lights in a lecture hall.So pick up the phone, call mommy and daddy, and tell them you’re taking a leave of absence from college to try something else. Then send me a message at derekmagill.com telling me you did it.
