Career Planning Help Sos

How can career counseling help?

Life is all about making the right choices – From the clothes we wear to the food we eat, From the phone we use to the things we read, every single day is filled with hundreds (or thousands) of choices. They say we are a result of our conscious as well as unconscious choices in life. So, why exactly is career counselling necessary? Or how exactly can career counselling help anyone? The answer to both the questions is same – With so many career paths and options to choose from, so many schools, colleges and institutes to choose from and ultimately so many directions to go on, only an experienced, professional and insightful career counselor can help you make the right choice. Even today, students are forced to follow the ‘typical’ path or profession in our country so as to get maximum security without any risks or challenges in life. However, this approach quickly fails as every student is different in terms of their mental and physical abilities, aptitude, strengths and weaknesses. Thus, by consulting a career counsellor, parents can better understand their children and allow them to make the right career choices for a consistent, clear and confident future ahead.Career Counselling not only helps students make the right career choice or pick the right course or college, it also enables them to think independently and take the right steps in the right decision. Irrespective of what career choices we make, life will be always full of challenges, hurdles and burdens. An experienced career counselor will guide and motivate a child, student or individual to be prepared for the challenges in life and face them with confidence and self-faith.

I need career counselling. Can anyone help me?

Dear Naveen, You can do Wonders ! You are your best guide and mentor. Let me give you a simple exercise on GOAL.  We are unable to differentiate between Goals and Dreams. Anything that do not have any deadline or quantity specified to it, is a dream, Like Big House, 6 figure salary, Good Job, etc. Now consider this.  A Manager Job by end of April 2017 with salary of 1,50,000 per month and a 3 BHK house in XXXX locality. Does it make sense now?Now your exercise for next 7 days is to write down you GOALS that should be S.M.A.R.TSpecific Measurable Attainable Realistic Time boundYour 5 GOALS for next one year, starting today should fall under the above mentioned criteria. Keep in mind what you can do and what you are capable of. Then design your next one year keeping in mind the goals you want to achieve and the ways to reach them. Do not set goals that are easily attainable. Set them so high that you yourself find it difficult to achieve.  Write them down on a plain paper and paste it on your mirror. See them daily as many times as you can. Starting day 3 you will start up building new ideas and ways to  achieve them. on 7th day I am pretty much sure you will know where your future is,  And the day you take your 1st step towards it, is the day , your life changes. Answer me on this same forum after 7 days what did you learn. And I would be happy if you could share how in just 7 days you could find what you can do best and what you had been missing so far. ** - Remember one thing, your goals should be so high that people around you, when know about it, should laugh on you and should say " Its Impossible for you ". If this happens your goals are Bang On Target.

Should I go for a career counselling?

In a time where many people are ruing some uninformed and unthoughtful decisions they have made earlier and are completely dissatisfied with the career they are pursing, it is much recommended that everyone who is looking forward to a bright and content future career should go through a proper career counselling exercise. Another thing to keep in mind is that you should be very careful while deciding how and from where you will take your counselling. Sadly, this is a field which is driven by biases and led by affinity to some careers that have been selectively glorified in the eyes of the society. But for the counselling process to be useful, the counselling process that you go through should be able to make accurate and effective suggestions based on who you are, what you would like to be and how much you are capable of.Quite luckily, we have been seeing some great interventions in this field in India with some of the best brains of the country trying to make positive changes in the education sector in general. One such counselling company that I have come across is LCAT ( Lead Career Assessment Test ) and what has struck me about the firm is that they are trying to offer very high quality service at a cost that is affordable to almost everyone. The team behind boasts of a background from some of the best colleges in India and abroad.

Is my recruiter lying?

I went and spoke with my army recruiter for the second time today. She had me take a practice asvab test and she found me a list of available jobs based on my score (she called ROC i think, but i could be wrong). I got five available, and I picked 42A Human Resources. she said its a great job and pays well. theres no enlistment bonus though, so does this even mean that its a good job? and is it possible for me to even have a reserved spot in that job before i took the actual asvab? she told me if i test well then it's gauranteed. i'm planning on reenlisting after two years as a vet tech or officer (spca will be my long term goal if i chose to be an officer). but the HR MOS is a 4 year commitment, so is this possible? i'm kind of confused and feel like i'm being screwed with by a really nice recruiter. im taking my physical and test tomorrow. is my MOS at HR even really gauranteed? or can they move me to combat if they want?
