I'm 23 with a BA in business admin, and I feel I am doomed to work an 8-5 job I hate for the rest of my life. How can I put myself on a better life path while I am young?

I was somewhat like you 32 years ago.  I got a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree when I was 26.  I didn't know what to study in college and since I enjoyed drawing and making stuffs that's what I did and I actually expected to get a good job after graduation - I didn't.  I went from low paying job to low paying job until I felt the load of reality - my first kid was on his way.  I took up a job at a Chinese restaurant and felt the need to study accounting.  Then I found a job with the IRS and someone at the IRS referred me to work as a staff accountant at a manufacturing company when I didn't have an accounting degree.  I made assistant controller in a couple of years and the need to get information out of the system got my involved in information.  Then I recognize that my career direction was clear that I needed to have a formal business education credential so I did MBA at nights and weekends.   Long story short, all of these steps led me to working as a manager of information at a large public company.  I enjoy my work of making information out of data.  This is something I didn't know if I just sit around thinking about it.  I found out through doing.  Looking back I think that I acted with vigor and that attracted some very good people wanting to help me to get to a better place.  It is good you are asking and it is great that you are only 23.  I recommend a book and a movie.  The book is called "The Alchemist" and the movie is "My Dinner With Andre".  I think they fit the topic very well.  Good luck - there is no simple answer but I feel if you keep at it with vigor you will find that people will help you along the way.

What is the easiest way to start a carpentry business?

WITH the assumption you know something about carpentry, and have the tools and experience to do the job, I’ll offer a few thoughts based on personal experience:Do you want to earn money as a carpenter, or start a business that does carpentry? In the first, you are driving nails. In the second, you own a business where you employ people that drive nails. What aspect of carpentry? New construction framing? Remodeling work? Fine carpentry (crown moulding and such)? In the area of live in, builders are in constant need of skilled and reliable framing carpenters. A skilled and reliable framer is in very high demand. The builders and contractors are in a near-constant state of panic as they try to find and retain the skilled and reliable framers. Many of them have almost dedicated partnerships with framing firms that, while independent companies, do most of their work for the same builder. That seems to work well for everyone.Fine carpentry might be a better niche as it (at least here) seems easier for an individual to start and prosper in this business. A friend of mine does this and makes enough to be happy — plus he loves the work — plus he does a lot of other stuff like installing gutters to cover slow times.Remodeling work, where I live, is the worst. Especially if it is exterior work. The carpenters are of moderate skill and will run from one job to another for a few cents more per hour. There are 3 unfinished projects in my own neighborhood owing to the workers just quitting one morning and going off to another job. That said, there is a business opportunity here!

What businesses can you start that are like plumbing and electrical services but aren't?

Looking broadly, there are two types of Plumbers/Electricians. First you have the Domestic folks who are usually self employed running their own businesses. These Plumbers/Electricians have a much broader business responsibility as they have to deal with their own business administration, marketing, supplier & customer relationships, accounting and financing processes etc. The second type is the Commercial or Industrial Plumber/Electrician who mainly work either as subcontractors or directly employed by a firm.Plumbers are Electricians are in the service industry, they are at the ‘skilled worker’ end of the service industry spectrum. Similar business would be along the lines of Carpentry, Vehicle Mechanics and Vehicle Technicians. These types of business require you to have a good understanding of the core activities and the core industries within where the work can be found.Owning a plumbing or electrical services business where you employ the skilled workers would be much like any sub-contracting business whether you are carrying out your business within the building industry or the advertising industry. A point to note here though, you’ll be dealing with very different types of people…

Do you have to be really strong?

Please give me any tips or pointers you have!

Should I leave my desk job to become a carpenter?

I'm twenty-four years old with a Business Administration degree from a well-respected university. I've been working in IT in the insurance industry for just about a year and a half and I really hate it. I make a great salary for my age, but sitting and looking at a computer all day is killing me. I'm just about as active as a person can be, spending all my off-work time outdoors and this clashes with my professional track.

I'm greatly considering leaving the cubicles to become a carpenter. A big part of me has always wanted to build houses. I do not have much carpentry experience at all, but I've always been able to excel in anything when I put my mind to it.

Ideally, I would love to work under a great carpenter/contractor to learn the trade and then begin my own company, specializing in new-home construction, remodeling, and renovation. I'd also like to purchase rental properties in high-demand residential areas and have a property management company on the side.

So my big questions are as follows:
1. How long will I need to work for another carpenter until I have enough experience to start my own company?
2. How much money should I expect to make working under another carpenter?
3. Is it a bad decision to go into a trade after spending four years in business school?

I'd really appreciate some advice from people with experience in what I'm looking to do. Thank you!

What is the best time to take the GMAT? What is a list of good B-schools in Canada?

GMAT is just a small part of the huge plan. It will be great to appear for it the first time one year before the application deadline for the university of your choice. This is appropriate when you don’t get the score that you want in the first attempt that your choice of university will accept. Then you will have time to retake the test for a few times again. Once you get your results, you can start planning for your student visa and other Documentation process. So if your target program begin in Fall 2018, you should have your score in hand before August 2017. Some suggest that you should start preparing for your GMAT one,two months before your application process. But we don’t think waiting for such an important exam till the last minute is a good option. But it may vary from student to student.List of top 10 B-Schools in Canada.10. John Molson School of Business, Concordia University9. Degroote School of Business, McMaster University8.
