Charitable Contributions

2017 charitable contributions (TAXES)?

For charitable contributions in 2017 vs. 2018 is it basically this:

Both 2017 and 2018 tax deductible charitable donations only apply if you opt out of the standard deduction? 2017 having lower standard deduction that is being the real difference..
OR
2017 and years past you could take the standard deduction AND tax deductible charitable donations? Albeit, the 2018 itemization vs. standardization decision still comes in play when talking about making a 2018 tax deductible charitable donations.

Basically I m wondering if there should be a race to do another end of year tax deductible donation (to count for 2017) or not given I will likely take the larger standard deduction route for 2018.

How do I deduct my charitable contributions from my taxes?

I assume we are talking US taxes...Charitable contributions are itemized deductions which are deducted on Schedule A with your Form 1040.   There are several categories of itemized deductions such as state income tax, property tax, mortgage interest and others.  You add up all your itemized deductions from Schedule A and if the total exceeds the standard deduction for you filing status, you reduce your income by the total to arrive at taxable income.

Are charitable contributions still tax deductible?

Yes, as long as your deductions exceed the standard (now $12K for single and $24K for married) and the charity is a qualified 501(c)(3) organization. The IRS maintains a list of qualified charities on their website here. You can also check for a charity’s tax form at http://Guidestar.org or 990 Finder or the IRS website.

What were Obamas recorded charitable contributions before he ran for the senate?

I don't think candidates release their tax forms for their whole lifetime.
How would that information be available?

Can I deduct Section 179 equipment as charitable contributions?

According to pub 946:

If you sell, exchange, or OTHERWISE DISPOSE OF [emphasis added] the property, do not figure the recapture amount under the rules explained in this discussion. Instead, use the rules for recapturing depreciation explained in chapter 3 of Publication 544 under Section 1245 Property. If the property is listed property (described in chapter 5), do not figure the recapture amount under the rules explained in this discussion when the percentage of business use drops to 50% or less. Instead, use the rules for recapturing excess depreciation in chapter 5 under What Is the Business-Use Requirement.

This would seem to mean that if you donate to charity, or at least if you take any deduction, you would then have to file 4797 to recapture excess depreciation. I think it would be easier to just not take the deduction.

Are charitable contributions paid on behalf of a dependent deductible by the payor on income taxes?

Only charity you pay is deductible. Sending other people's contributions with your checks isn't deductible but you might not get caught.
