Chihuahua Wont Let Me Groom Him

My chihuahua won't let me trim his nails what can i do?

It sounds like he just HATES having his nails done! Some dogs are like that. You could try and see if a groomer has any luck with him, or you could buy a muzzle, muzzle him, wrap him in a towel tight like a burrito and do one foot at a time. The only reason the vet doesn't do this is because he is afraid you will object to him confining your dog this way. The nail phobic dog WILL scream, defecate, urinate, struggle, and eliminate their anal glands if they are restrained for nails, that is automatically going to happen, and if you don't just continue doing them despite this, he feels he has won and will be even worse the next time. The only reason that the vet doesn't restrain him this way is because he is afraid that you will object. If he is only 5 and in good health, the anesthesia is easier on him than restraining him, really! We have to anesthetize sick and injured dogs every day to help them and they do well, and the size of the dog doesn't matter, we know how to do the little ones just as well as the big ones. A lot of chihuahuas and dachshunds are difficult to do the nails on, its not just you and your dog. Sorry there is no perfect answer. Good luck!

My chihuahua won't let anyone cut her nails?

Usually I recommend a groomer but she is wary of strangers and thus fight ten times harder. Chi's tend to fight this and act like it hurts only because they dont like the uncomfortable feeling. I know I do this as a living. I dread the littlest Chi with the longest nails.
I recommend getting a muzzle that fits properly and lure her nose into it with a treat. If you can not get a hold of one here is a site to read through for a homemade one.

Do not keep muzzled for long as an open mouth pant is how dogs sweat and destress.

Pet her all over in her favorite spots before you begin trimming. that way she doesn't just assosiate nail trim with muzzle. When you trim do not let go off paw when she fights, she is used to her fighting and is rewarded with you letting go. treat her or rubb her in favorite spots when ever she lets you trimm with out fighting. Do not remove muzzle until you have cuddled her and lavished attention and she relaxes again.

You may only get on paw done at a time at first. no more than ten minutes each time or it will really stress her out. Do this once a day or every other day even if there is no need to be trimmed and just touch the clippers to the nail with out actually clipping it. Eventually she will calm down somewhat and trust you with her paws a little bit more. i have had to do this with my chow chow as well. so I know it is a process sometimes frusterating but in the end I am happy to have done it!

How can I get my chihuahua to let me clip her nails?

I have a six month old chihuahua and she HATES having anyone touch her paws. Her vet told me to buy a small dog nail clipper and even told me exactly how to clip her nails. The first time, it was so easy...she didnt even move. Now she jerks and crys, and seems to go crazy when I try. Her nails were getting so long that I took her to the vet so he could clip them...but big mistake, she was so terrified that she fell off the table. Her nails are getting really long, and I'm in desperate need of finding a way to get her to let me clip her nails. (she just left a huge scratch right across my face the other day)

My friends Chihuahua wont let her cut her nails?

It really isn't that expensive. . . like $10-15. A vet or groomer would be more likely to be able to safely restrain the dog while doing it. She should try petting and rubbing the paws often so the dog gets used to having it's feet touched. If the dog has had a bad experience (it is very painful when the quick is cut and bleeds) it will likely always have trust issues with it's feet.

I accidentally cut my dog while grooming him, how should I treat it?

It depends on the size of the cut.#1 - 1/4 inch on less: dab it with a cotton ball soaked in iodine and leave it alone. Dogs heal fast, faster than any other animal I've ever encountered.#2 - 1/2in - 1 inch: clip the fur around it (how far out from the wound depends on how long the fur is; with a short coated dog, just the immediate area will do while an exceedingly hairy specimen may need to be clipped two or three inches out from the edge of the wound). Once clipped, clean the cut with peroxide and apply some Vetricin if you have it. No big deal if you don't. After that, flush it once a day with peroxide until it heals or scabs over. It won't take long. If it starts looking more red than pink, switch to iodine diluted 50/50 with clean water (straight iodine burns like hell)#3 - 1 inch or more: Ok, if you cut your dog this bad, you might want to find someone else to groom him, but I digress. Accidents happen.First stop the bleeding by applying firm, steady pressure with a towel, shirt, toilet paper, whatever you have. It doesn't have to be sterile because you're going to be cleaning it anyway. But be warned, if it's a head or foot wound, it's going to bleed a lot at first. Don't freak out… too bad. Ok, you can freak out but keep applying pressure until it stops.Next, assess how bad it is. If it doesn't go all the way through the skin, follow the steps for #2. If you can see muscle, go to the vet. If you can't afford the vet right now for something that's not life threatening (we've all been there), don't use peroxide for this one. Leave it alone for twelve hours and then gently flush it with diluted iodine (50/50). Like I said before, dogs heal amazingly fast and their skin is wonderfully elastic so their wounds shrink quickly.Continue flushing it daily until the swelling is gone. It also helps to massage the area to stimulate blood flow and help reduce the swelling.Stay calm. Dogs are tough. Maybe find a professional groomer, but don't beat yourself up too bad. It was just an accident.

My Chihuahua will NOT let me cut her nails.?

Maybe you have cut too short in the past and she is associating pain with those dreaded clippers! lol.

You could switch to a dremel, they file down rather than clipping. Otherwise, you just need to make it a positive thing. A little peanut butter can help, or some other treat. If there is someone else home, get them to hold her head up and keep her still while you clip.

Or go to the groomers.

How often should a chihuahua's nails be cut?

I have two chihuahuas and took them to the vet to get their nails cut for the first time. I asked the vet how often should I bring them back to get their nails cut, and he said every 2-3 weeks. Is this true? I am concerned the vet said this just so that I would continue to take them in and he could charge me every time.

My chihuahua is crazy and doesn't let us cut his nails.?

Work with him every day, gently touching his paws and telling him that he's a good boy. If he doesn't growl give him a little treat. Make him used to having his feet touched. If he's on your lap and you are watching TV just gently touch his feet, make it a routine thing. Chihuahuas are funny about their feet being messed with. Just take it slowly, and make sure you let him know that you are the boss, and not him. He could have been 'quicked' in the past (his nails could have been cut too short, and were painful, therefore he thinks that it will happen every time).

Help my dog won't let me cut his nails!?

I recently took in a dog, he is a 4 year old blue nose pit bull/ boxer mix. I don't know much about his history other than he was probably going to be used for fighting. The person was about to give him up to a kill shelter and me being the animal lover and sucker that I am I just had to take him in. I know I should have asked for more history on him but it was a such a quick thing I really didn't have time. The woman basically said you either take him or I'm dropping him off somewhere. At first I was going to shelter him for a while and then search for a good forever home for him but of course he grew on me and I couldn't bring myself to give him up. I originally decided to groom him at my home because he had trouble around other dogs and given the little history I did have on him I wouldn't risk bringing him to a public place. No here's the problem. When I start to clip his nails he gets mouthy and aggressive with me like I said I have no idea why because I really don't know much about him but I really don't get much farther then one toe nail. He loves baths but he hates when people touch his paws. I have been hesitant bringing him to groomers until now. I am exhausted and I am tired of struggling. His nails are getting too long and I am afraid they will cause other health problems. But my big concern is that if I bring him to a groomers he will hurt the groomer attempting to cut his nails. Mind you he is a big boy with powerful pitt bull jaws and if he bites someone you know the humane society will not hesitate to put him down. Do groomers have the necessary tools to hold him down or calm him? If not what are my other choices??

Help! Squirmy dog won't let me near her nails!?

Chances are it is not you, the clippers, trust or anything in particular by itself. It's when all these things are together that she is having the issue.
I would start by setting the clippers by her food bowl so she has to eat next to them. I would also play with the clippers with no look to her when she is playing and eating. Don't put them away if she cowers... just ignore her. Then walk away with them.
Let her experience you and the clippers together without her involved. Let her experience being with the clippers by her bowl without you involved.
Next, start touching her with them but not clipping. Pick her up and then the clippers then put the clippers down then her. Never put her down first or while she is struggling. This lets her know that she has to be calm in your arms to get down. Don't let her 'win' this one. She will pitch a fit everytime.
After all this is going well, clip one paw while she is eating something soooo yummy. Chicken breast or cheese or roasted pork... yum.
Put the food and the clippers away, praise her and put her down. Try the other paws one at a time later. She needs the reinforcement and confidence that the scenario has changed and is ok.

If she has a fit, the food goes away and she is held till she is calm. Then try again... and if she is stressing again, the food goes away and when she is calm, she is put down. Notice, i did not say the clippers go away. She can not learn that she controles when the clippers go and come. Then the next day try a different yummy.

best of luck, and i hope this helps.
