Choose The Right Words

Choosing the right word....?

My first language is not English but Japanese so I still have a problem of choosing a right word. And my American husband's dad corrected me before because I called black people black people.

Well, I had a car accident at a parking lot last year and I needed to report the accident to my car insurance company. And I called the company and told that there were a black couple who kindly talked to me and checked me if I was ok or not. I described the couple as a black couple because they are black people. Well, if they were an asian couple, I would describe them as asians, and if they were white, I would describe them as whites.

Anyways, I told about that to my husband's dad who is white and he got really upset and told me that describing them as a black couple means I was prejudice against black people. So if I see black people, I would describe them as people not black people.

But anyways, in that situation, I shouldn't describe black people as black people but just people?

PS: You are turning people off by making the question so long, normally I wouldn't do this, but the questions were sooooo easy, I couldn't resist.
