Choosing A New Laptop

Help Choosing Laptop?

Lately I have been interested in buying a new laptop. I was looking at Dell's XPS 13 Siganture Edition. As I was looking for other alternatives I found out about the Lenovo y40-80. I would use it for word processing, movies, maybe low-end gaming. Both use windows 8.1 64B

Specs and price:

Dell XPS 13 Signature Edition Laptop:

Display: 13.3 in UltraSharp QHD+ (3200 x 1800) infinity touch display, 10-finger multi-touch support
Processor: Intel Core i5-5200U 2.20 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.70 GHz
Hard drive size: 256GB SSD
Memory: 8GB DDR3L 1600 MHz
Video : Intel HD Graphics 5500 with shared graphics memory
Weight: 2.80 lbs (1.27 kg)
Battery : 52 WHr, 4-cell (15 hours)* (supposedly)
Camera: 1MP webcam
Wireless: 802.11ac (Miracast enabled)
Price: $1299

Lenovo Y40-80 Laptop - 80FA0017US:

Display: 14.0" FHD LED AntiGlare (1920x1080)
Processor: 5th Generation Intel Core i7-5500U Processor (2.40GHz 1600MHz 4MB)
Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M275 4GB
Memory: 16.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L 1600 MHz
Hard Drive: 512GB SSD SATA III
Battery: 4 Cell 48 Watt Hour Li-Polymer
Network Card: Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160
Weight: 5.72 lbs( 2.6 kgs
Camera: I think it is 720p
Price: $949

Obviously Dell's bigger advantage is the display. It has much more pixels, it is a lot less heavy. I do not know which graphic card is better but maybe Dell's is better. Lenovo is $340 cheaper. I seems to have better specs in certain areas. I do not know much of either company.

Need help choosing a gaming laptop?

Right now I have an Acer Aspire 5253-BZ841, it's only a few years old and it's a fabulous laptop, but not so much for gaming. It lags frequently and has painfully slow loading time, among other things wrong with it. I've decided it's time for a new computer with the ability to support my needs.

The only game I really play is League of Legends, if that helps. I don't know for sure, but I don't think it takes as much effort for a computer as something like World of Warcraft or Diablo 3(D3 was nearly impossible to play on this thing...) but I could be wrong. I am on the computer ALOT, so on top of efficiently running my game, I'd love for it to be reliable and fast for when I browse the internet, use Photoshop, ect.

I THINK I'd like to get a laptop, because I do travel around a bit, but a desktop computer is ABSOLUTELY NOT out of the question. I could always keep this laptop and take it with me when I go and have my awesome desktop at home.

I did a little research and these laptops were the most appealing to me:

My budget is like $1200, so I'd love some advice about computers in that price range. Can anyone vouch for any of these laptops I linked or suggest better ones that I can research? Any help is appreciated.

How can I choose a laptop? I am a government servant, and I don't need any costly laptop with unnecessary facilities.

HIThanks for A2A.Although this again depends on your use case .In case you need a laptop for web-browsing and small applications like Office apps, etc you could go for a machine having 4 GB of RAM and i3 Processor to have a good ,value for money experience .Graphics cards are optional and the disk size also is up to your choice.Such configs will be available in 20–29k bracket and should provide a comfortable computing experience. To lower down prices comparatively, you may buy a DOS OS system or one having Linux distributions(like Mint,Ubuntu) installed. This is only a basic outline and other parameters like battery ,sound quality,I/O ports etc. depend on you and can play a role in the pricing of the system. So do a thorough market check and see all available options and purchase the one which suits your needs.Hope this helps.Cheers !!

Choose: Laptop or Dog?

*I'M A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL.*

If I get...
Straight B's all year = Laptop
Straight A's all year = Dog

Not a bad deal, but if I get straight A's, I'm only allowed to have a dog OR laptop. If can't have both. If I get a laptop, then it's a waste of straight A's, ya know?

Idk, what would you choose if you had neither?

P.S.- I'm ready for a dog just incase you're wondering. I've fostered many family friends' dogs for time spans of up to 4 months. I've also volunteered at the local ASPCA shelter over the summer. I am definitely commited. It's just that I'd like a laptop also, although I've got my own computer.

What is the best website for choosing a laptop?

I've found CNet's laptop search and buying guides to be a good resource for general users. They offer comparisons, buying guides, reviews, current pricing, and an actual "laptop finder" to help you get through the selection minefield.http://reviews.cnet.com/4247-312...

I'm buying a new laptop. What should I get?

Top Zenith: Top 7 things you should know before buying a laptopWell, I think you might also be confused when selecting the best laptop that suits for you in affordable budget. When looking at the specifications, we'll get confused and banging our heads to understand the terminology used in the product description. In the dilemma, we decide to buy any random laptop without having proper knowledge and then regret about it later. To avoid this, it worth to consider below things before buying the laptop:High-End or Low-End userDecide yourself whether you want to use the laptop for heavy tasks such as 3D graphics, Video Editing, Photoshop and multitasking etc,. or you want to use the laptop for light tasks such as watching movies, browsing web etc,.Once you decided whether you're a high-end user or low end user then 50% of your job is done in selecting the best laptop that suits you. Now, you're just left with choosing specifications.ProcessorAMD and Intel are the major processors available in the market but let's see the difference between them:There are different generations in the intel process you might have heard of i3, i5, i7 versions of the processor. i3 is enough for the low-end users and i5,i7 are best for high end users.RAMThe abbreviation of RAM is Random access memory. Let's understand how the RAM works, whenever you open any application like browser, before browser appears on the screen, the files will be loaded in the RAM and when simultaneously you have opened a heavy task like after effects. If there will not be sufficient space in RAM. The browser application will be swapped by after effects. RAM will do the same whenever a new application is opened or launched. Higher the RAM, higher the performance. In normal user, 4GB of RAM is enough for students for learning programming or watching the movies. In the market, there are different types of RAM's such as DDR2, DDR3, DDR4. Among these DDR3 will be best, will be good enough for students etc,.I have listed top 7 things in the below linkTop Zenith: Top 7 things you should know before buying a laptop

What laptop s specs between these two would you choose for a Computer Engineering Student?

Next month I ll start my bachelor degree in Computer Engineering. I need a new laptop. I would love to have buy a Macbook Pro (since I m used to Apple s ecosystem, I use iPhone and iPad) but at this moment I cannot afford a good spec macbook.

So, I ve seen two laptops that catched my atention. They are Lenovo Ideapads 720s but with different specs.

First Option: Ideapad 720s-14IKB
14
Intel Core I7-8550U 1.8 GHz
16Gb Ram
256SSD
NVIDIA GeForce MX150 2GB.

OR

Second Option: Ideapad 720s-15ikb
15.6
Intel Core I7-7700HQ 2.8GHz
16GB Ram
512GB SSD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050TI

I know that the second option as a better graphics card and more SSD space. But the first option has an 8th generation processor rather than a 7th generation. Does this make a big difference?
