Cis Vs Mis Which Is The More Valuable Degree In It

Which is a better degree, MIS or CS?

CS is more geared towards programmers and app developers. MIS is more geared to database administrators, systems administrators and IT managers.I did MIS degree, then mostly did large database stuff for multiple Insurance companies, along with overall IT administration.CS is definitely more exciting, this is what software companies in SF, Seattle, Boston generally want.To me I’m more of a larger systems person, I like tinkering with hardware, some coding, some network stuff, some database stuff. MIS suited me better.Under CS you will generally study more science and math courses, along with more advanced programming courses.MIS will compliment light programming courses with managerial courses, accounting, economics, etc.

What is the difference between MIS vs CIS?

MIS requires a business background and the main emphasis are businesses related applications. For example Accounting Information Systems, CRM, and ERP are systems used in MIS. Computer Science is more technical and focused on Computer operations. A computer scientist would create a database management system, while an MIS professional would set up the database for use in the business.

Is MS in MIS still a relevant degree?

This is a great question. Management Systems is actually even more valuable today than eve before. Management Information Systems is of paramount importance to reach effective decisions in an organization. ... MIS is deemed to be an integrated user-machine system that provides information to support operations, management and decision-making functions at various levels of an organization. What has changed over the years is how this information was obtained. In the 90’s this information was obtained through systems called DSS (Decision Support Systems). DSS have since transformed itself into data warehouses. Data warehouses are not being transformed into data lakes. So although the technology and the data repository models are changing the over basis for MIS has not changed. The need for this expertise is still paramount. I actually lean more on my MIS knowledge now more than before because it is what helps me architect the right technology solutions around the data in order to ensure that the right data is getting to the right people at the right time. MIS has always had a niche because its the only degree that focuses on the data model. If you follow the model you get to the data and the is the true essence of the MIS education. BIS is more business process and rules engines and CIS is more technology and data transfer. I speak only from my own technological, industry and educational experiences. My statements are based on my opinion.

Is an Informatics degree of the same value as a Computer Science degree?

The answer depends on what market you intend to go into. If you are planning a career in business oriented programming or IT then an Informatics degree is probably sufficient. However, it is also limiting. As another answer has stated, a computer science degree requires skill in mathematical problem solving that exceeds what is required in an MIS, CIS or Informatics type agree. If you desire to become a software developer with the broadest possible career opportunities set before you than I urge you to major in Computer Science and “pay the price” early on in your life to learn the fundamentals of mathematics and science.I’ve written about this extensively in many other answers here on Quora. Here is a good place to start. Computer Science vs Information Technology. Which one is harder and which one pays better?

Well if you enjoy math and programming, then go for Computer Science. If you like learning about how technology is used in Organizations, and hands-on learning about the different career options within Technology, go with Information technology(aka IT or Information Systems).

Computer Science is known to be the more challenging major because upper level math and programming are involved, but its also the more valuable degree to some organizations and can sometimes, but not always, lead to higher salaries than Information Technology. Information Technology usually has more diverse career options since most people, but not all, involved in Computer Science become Programmers or Engineers.

Either way you should be fine getting a job with either major since they both are technology-related fields that are in-demand. Do more research and see which one fits you more. Plus if you don't like one you can always change your major to the other.

Hope this helps and best of luck!! :)

Better Computer major, Computer science or MIS (management information systems)?

Hi i wanted to pursue my career in the computer field and i been hearing so much controversy over the major people is better...i am basically stuck between majors, CS (computer science) or MIS (management information systems), I dont know which one is better. i know Computer science is more programming based and MIS is less programming more business side. I am actualy not that interested in programming but i love computers and i know i want a career in that field. i heard that CS majors have a better salary than MIS. I want to know if i choose MIS if i will get a salary/job. So please give input you guys have on this thank you!

Are you a computer programmer?

Yes, until VERY recently. Working a help desk right now, but they still have me, you know, fix stuff.

Don't ask me about education. I rode the .COM boom :)

Of course I enjoy it, it's very involved and you'll work with a lot of amazing people. You'll solve interesting problems. It'll teach you how much you don't know! You never really stop learning. That's why I always scratched my head about what they taught in the schools. Unless you're working with the really dinosaur stuff the landscape changes JUST ENOUGH every year or 2. (And IBM will start putting application servers and virtualization on the mainframes too! So there ya go.)

Of course there are fundamentals they will teach you in school, common to all languages / platforms, that are indispensable, so you're doing the right thing, don't worry. You'll still be well prepared for what to expect.

Pay depends on your education, experience. Salary is all over the place, like any other profession. Once you get going and prove some mettle, and show that you are a versatile person that will do anything, technical or not, to release working software, it can be nice. However some of the old foges may have given you some stories! I've seen conditions for IT people decline! I've seen some people taking some poor salaries, that they absolutely should not have, due to the recessions. Of course if you're working on games at EA, isn't the ceiling there like 40K? lol, there are odd places like that.

And i saw the glamorous, glitzy days of the profession, but by and large they are long gone. We used to get our own area. But now more often than not, we're just smooshed in with everyone else, and subject to the same working conditions. :(

There are still some independent shops that like to keep the old guard spirit alive. Seek them out! That's what that fancy edumacation will come in handy for!
