Common App Essay Prompt

First off, thank you to the Common App for increasing the word count from 500 to 650. I just *finished* my Common App essay using the first essay prompt of "Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story." I thought this would give me a great opportunity to discuss my past 6 years of building my sports blog and the unique experiences and stories that has afforded me. I brought in my humor, personality, etc. to show how this experience has shaped me into who I am, what I am interested in, and how I communicate with others. It seems to be the most vague of the new essay prompts, but allows an applicant to run with it however they like to. Some students will use this prompt to extend their résumé, which may bother schools.

Common App Essay Prompt #1 help?

The prompt says: Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

Does the essay have to be in a narrative form? Because I don't have a story to write about but I do have an idea or philosophy which I feel is central to my identity and would like to write an essay describing the influences of the philosophy and when I have applied it to my life. Is this fine or does it have to be a personal story?

College Board says that students can now make unlimited edits to their Common App essay after submission of their first application. https://appsupport.commonapp.org...I went to the Common App support to ask specifically about the change in prompts. Here is the copy of my chat with the Common App:Your chat is being directed to the next available Solutions Analyst.Darrell: Welcome to the Common App Live Chat. My name is Darrell. How can I help you today?Me: I know that common app says that students can make unlimited edits to the main essay after submitting the first application. Does it mean a student can choose a different topic for the other college?Darrell: That is correct.Me: Let's say I have 5 colleges on my list. So I can choose a different prompt for each of these colleges, right?Darrell: Yes, if you are willing to write 5 separate essays, you can definitely do that.Me: OK, thank you.

Colleges that use the Common App have you write one of those prompts. If they have further things that they want to know about you, they have you also fill out a supplement, which can be seen on their websites.

I am going to be the contrarian. It is a bad essay. I know some of these points will come across as a bit harsh, but hopefully it will be helpful. The biggest problem with the essay is that - Your Questionable Decision Making Led to Your FailureThis is a really hard essay prompt and I typically do not recommend using it for the Common Application (see How to Select Your Essay Prompt for the Common Application). The big problem you have here is that it was your questionable decisions that led to this "failure" of bad grades, limited social life, and limited extracurricular activities. It's great that you were able to get out of your rut and find success - however if I was an admissions officer you would scare me. You are essentially using this essay to explain away a period of bad grades and then provide your common excuses such as "difficulty assimilating into a new culture." How do I know that you won't slip into another rut at my school? How do I know you will assimilate in the culture quickly? Additionally, you only solved the grade part of the issue according to your essay and no the "meaningful peer connections" part you bring up. Short story is that if you are going to use this essay prompt and write about this experience, you need to spend less time on the issues and more time on how you turned yourself around. What made you come to this realization? How are you a changed person moving forward? Were you able to create meaningful connections with your peers? Were you able to convince your parents to let you go out more?I recommend getting more detailed advice from a professional editing service such as EditRevise where there are editors with content expertise in admissions essays. Additionally, the EditRevise Writing Center has several very useful articles on how to write your college admission essay.Sorry to be the contrarian, but I hope you find this helpful.

Common Application Essay? What prompt should I put it under?

I'm not going to post it, because I'm worried about it being on the internet, but I'll describe it.
I talk about my experiences with drugs and alcohol issues in my family, and some issues with mental disorders and how that has influenced me to want to work in psychology.

There are a few prompts on the Common App that I think it could fit under, but which would be best? Also, if I choose one, what extra information or thoughts should I include?

Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.

Or should I just put it under Topic of my choice?

You have to go to Commonapp.org and sign up for an account. Then find Loyola Marymount and add it to your schools. You will actually have to comeplete a number of essays for through the whole application process. The supplement includes one main essay for which I chose the question below.

Please read the three statements below, which all relate to the mission and the values of Loyola Marymount University. Choose the one you find most interesting and thought provoking; then answer the question which accompanies the statement you select. This essay, usually 500 - 1,000 words, is your chance to display your critical and creative thinking. Please be sure your name appears on each page of your essay.

STATEMENT 1: In his homily at the Class of 2005’s Baccalaureate Mass, LMU’s President Fr. Robert Lawton, S.J., said: ‘‘So what is the answer to this deep insecurity we all feel? The answer, I think, is to embrace the adventure of becoming deeply, and fully, ourselves. This is what God is really calling us to. It seems like the riskiest of all journeys, this journey to be one self. But its ultimately the journey that leads us to happiness, that leads us into God’s dreams for us.’’

QUESTION 1: Why do you think Fr. Lawton says the ‘‘journey to be oneself’’ seems the riskiest of all journeys? What risks lie ahead in your college career as you embark on the ‘‘adventure’’ of discovering and becoming yourself?
