When is the best time to eat yogurt? Before a meal? During a meal? After a meal? Instead of a meal?

You can have yogurt at any time. But its benefits vary accordingly when you consume it.Lets consider first case of before meal. According to modern medicine system (allopathy) it is better to have yogurt in small quantity before food as it contains bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus which are acid loving. Empty stomach is more acidic and this helps these good bacteria to get attached to inner lining of stomach and thus you have protection from harmful bacteria like Helicobacter pylori. That is one reason why gastroenterologist recommend pro and prebiotic capsules before breakfast.Now what will happen if you eat yogurt with food. Yogurt also contain significant amount of protein. Vegetarian food may contain many antinutrient factors such as phytate, tannins which can form complexes with yogurt protein and lower its absorption. This is chelation reaction and may lower calcium absorption from yogurt.Same applies when you are eating yogurt after meal. But there is one more benefit of taking yougurt after meal and that is it can make pH of stomach somehwhat acidic and thus helps in digestion.According Indian medicinal ststem, Ayurveda, one should drink water in morning, buttermilk in afternoon and milk in evening before going to sleep to get best results. For those having issue in digestion, better to avoid milk and switch over yogurt. But buttermilk is more superior when it comes to patient with gastritis and othet health issues. One should make sure butter milk or yogurt is fresh or live culture. Better to avoid old and highly sour yogurt.When you have stomach issue, can't digest milk, can take yogurt instead of milk but make sure you are drinking enough water.One another thing to remember here is how much quantity of yogurt you are consuming. Yogurt made by buffalo milk is thick with high fat, whereas cows yogurt is not thick. Indian traditional method involves boiling of milk, followed by cooling and then use of earthen pot for making yogurt. This is best method to get thicker yogurt. For maximum benefit, it should be consumed in moderate quantity 2–3 times spreading throughout day.Remember, anything in excesss is poison and anything in moderate dose at appropriate time is medicine.
