What is wrong with my computer and computer monitor? It has a black screen and says 99 in the right-hand corner.

Computer stuck on black screen?

Without having additional information, it could be a few things.

If your computer is a laptop and from the second that it turns on, you have nothing on the screen...not even the manufacturer's logo, then it could be a motherboard issue. Most of the time that is the case. Sometimes, though, it's static electricity built up in the computer. To discharge it, you will need to remove the AC adapter and battery and then, with both of those removed, press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds to a minute. Nothing will appear to happen, but it will discharge any static electricity that is looking for an exit in the computer. Plug in your AC adapter and battery and try turning on the computer.

If it is a desktop and you have no video, try turning the monitor on by itself. If you get a "no input signal" or any kind of message like that, then your screen is fine.

If you turn on the tower with the monitor and don't have anything, not even a manufacturer's logo, then it could be a video card or the motherboard. You can discharge the tower the same as a laptop...just remove the power cable and hold the power button.

You did mention that you could hear static from the headphones. If the headphones are plugged in to the tower then it sounds more like a motherboard issue. If it is plugged into the monitor, as some have built-in speakers, then it could just be the monitor.

Additionally, for a desktop, it really could be a motherboard problem. It's becoming more and more common for the video and sound cards to be integrated onto the motherboard. Which could explain the sound and video issues.

What is a computer monitor screen made out of?

Depends on what type of monitor you're talking about. The old type, similar to a TV has a big tube (Hence the name Cathode Ray Tube or CRT) in the cabinet and the images are shown as "guns" move up and down and sideways very quickly. New LCD monitors are very thin and have an LCD screen with complex circuitry to produce true digital images.

Help! Why does my computer monitor screen sometimes flash a wave of light?

This computer is fairly new. We got it last February. It is a Hewlet Packard (HP) and the monitor is a HP mx705 flat screen. Within the past month, the screen keeps having these quick blips that worry me that something is wrong. About every 10 minutes or so, (it is random), a line of white light will flash and move in a wave from the bottom of the screen to the middle of the screen. And the bottom half of the screen will then be black for a milisecond. This all happens super fast and comes along with a quick static sound. YIKES! What could this be and what do I need to do to fix it (is it something that needs to be fixed or will it go away????) I know NOTHING about computers!

Why does my computer screen/monitor sometimes not give me a signal?

I have had a Samsung S22D390 screen/monitor for a couple of years now, and I've noticed within the last month or so that sometimes when I go to power on my computer tower and then turn the monitor on that I won't get a signal on the screen. It will just stay black or just constantly flip flop from 'VGA' to 'HDMI'. The blue LED power light on the monitor itself will also just flash/blink. When this does happen I've been forced to hold down the power button on my tower to restart it which I know isn't advised to do, but I've had no other choice. I've tried taking the HDMI cable in and out, I've tried VGA when HDMI fails to give me a signal and vice versa. About 10 minutes ago I had my computer on 'sleep' mode, and then when I was ready to jump back on the PC I failed to get a image on the screen. The tower itself was fully operational, but the screen failed to give me any signal much like I describe above. I should stress that this does not happen every single time, but it has happened enough times to have me worried.

I've found that I have to quickly turn on the monitor a second after I turn on the power on the tower to avoid this lack of signal issue, but this doesn't always work..

This never happened at all when I was using VGA directly onto my tower's motherboard, but I've had a couple of different graphics card within the last couple of months, and currently I am using a NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 730.
