Concerned I Maybe Bipolar

How can I show my concern for a friend who has from bipolar?

(I’ve never before commented on a Quora question, so I hope you’ll consider that in evaluating what I have to say. This is important.)I have lived my entire adult life with depression. But it was only after my October 2012 suicide attempt that I heard my diagnosis of bipolar 2. I learned about bipolar in general — higher highs and lower lows on the natural range of mood — and how it must be managed. Fortunately, with drugs and therapy it CAN be.“How can I show my concern for a friend who suffers from bipolar?”At the risk of over-parsing, I will parse the question.I’ll start by adding to another comment. Don’t start with an assumption. Only if your friend has shared his or her diagnosis should you engage. Bipolar is a medical condition, and it would be wrong to offer advice/sympathy/concern on the basis of an armchair assessment. If, however, your friend has received a diagnosis from a physician and shared it with you, then and only then…Ask.I have been open about my condition, including writing about it on my own blog and other websites where thousands of people read about it. Other people might have tiptoed into the public realm. Tread gently. Here are things I could imagine being OK (for me):“What’s it like?”“Is there anything I can do?”“Is it scary?”“What does the medicine do?”Finally, don’t think in terms of “suffer.” I endure, I work, I take my meds, I learn. But I don’t suffer.

Can someone get rid of there Bipolar?

Well bipolar disorder may be able to be controlled with medications (mood stabilizers and/or anti-psychotics) and taken on a regular basis as prescribed, however, it will not go away -- just more controlled with the medication(s). Those with bipolar, used to be referred to as manic depression as someone else mentioned, may experience psychotic (psychological break in reality and may have delusions and/or hallucinations) symptoms and thus violent behavior but it's certainly not an excuse for such behavior :) And I wouldn't want to deal with some who is mentally unstable specifically if they do not take their meds as prescribed. Some people with mental health problems feel better after taking their meds and think that they can stop them, however, that couldn't be further from the truth as most mental illnesses are biochemical in nature and require medication over the long-term (typically lifetime).

Could I have bipolar disorder?

I started out online as you did - my sister said to me "you have been a bit manic lately" so I googled manic and mania and ended up on bipolar sites - 2 sites I went to had online tests (Ill give the links below) both tests said if you score over 25 (I think) then you may be bipolar I scored in the 40s on both so I printed out the tests and took them to my GP (regular Dr) and he referred me to a psychiatrist - I took the test results to the psychiatrist and he said he knew of one of the tests however it wasnt rocket science to diagnose me as I was talking a million miles per hour my mind was jumping from topic to topic mid sentence and Id forget what I was talking about and have to ask the Dr what I was saying and he had to bring me back to topic many times, I also had spent $65000.00 of my equity in my home in a 6 month period and I didnt have much to show for it and there is also my history of about 17 years of just plain depression and lastly I had been self medicating without realising it for around 7 years with Benzos to help me sleep and Valium to calm me down as I thought my mania was panic attacks and so did my GP ... thats just some of the story but I think you get the picture.'

Have a look at the sites below and if they do suggest you have bipolar print them out and take them to your Dr and take it from there

Is bipolar disorder genetic?

Bi-polar disorder is genetic. I have it as well as my mother and father. Just be on the look out for major swings in your and your daughters moods ( extremely happy or excited to sadness or depression, etc. ) that happen in a short period of time. Also, be on the ball when it comes to mania. Mania basically shows itself when one does wild things that are not " normal " and can't be stopped because these things are done with out thinking about them first. I am not the type of person to hurt myself, but when I wasn't on the right medication, I would hit my head on a wall or something drastic like that if my boyfriend and I were fighting and I couldn't control myself or my anger. It sounds nuts, but it was a form of self preservation to cause myself pain so that the pain I felt from the outside didn't hurt so badly. It also would end the fight abruptly because I displayed such a crazy reaction. The mania you or your daughter might exhibit may not be so drastic, but there are many things people do in a manic state that are on all different levels.
Should you feel that the possibility of being bi-polar for your child or yourself is true, nip it in the bud right away! Get to a psychiatrist ASAP and get tested. There is a med. out now called Abilify. Check into it. It's not labeled to be for bi-polar disorder, but many people ( especially children ) are now having it perscribed to them. It builds Seratonin and has worked miracles for me. It's obvious if I haven't taken it because I feel and appear so much healthier when I take it. I went from being on a cocktail of 7 different meds. to just this one and I feel great now. Just keep your eyes open to the symptoms and get tested. Best of luck :)

What do you do when your Boss is Bipolar?

Its always best to avoid a confrontation with a supervisor. The best way to counter this is to maintain your own positive attitude. Don't let his mysery ruin your day.
