Where have my iPhone contacts gone?

I really can’t tell you but I can attempt to tell you how I see contacts work. The places contact can be stored are in your iPhone, in the iCloud, or in a eMail cloud like google, yahoo, Microsoft. In settings on your iPhone you set where a new contact is placed when entered on your device. In iCloud settings, when you turn contacts on, you have the option of merging what’s on your iPhone to where iCloud stores contacts. (Note: this area doesn’t take away from iCloud storage for photos and backups). You also turn on contacts in each eMail settings on your device, this syncs the contacts in your eMail and to the phone. When you turn off the contacts in iCloud or in your eMail settings they disappear from the iPhone. If the iPhone is the only place they are kept then they are what’s left after turning everything off. That is unless your device was restored at some time, or never backed up (note: if you had contacts turned off in iCloud I assume they will be included in the full backup).
