I am getting Cortisone shots in my shoulder. How this can affect my general health?

Cortisone injections Will make you more suceseptable to: sun burns, infections anywhere in your body, watch your sugar intake as well ( it lowers your white blood cell production which are your body's deffenses to germs). The steroid works but you need to ask, at what cost, and decide if it is worth it given the risks. It decreases the inflamatory response (this takes the swelling out of the joint after a few days... but at first it will be more swollen and more painful than before the injection). Often this relief is only temperary because you are not treating the undrelying problem. Keep in mind that the action of the steroid will erode away the conective tissues like ligiments, tendons and articular cartlidge, (articular cartlidge is the outermost surface of the bone, it is smooth and thin and quickly distroyed with these injections). Usually the MD's will not give more than 3 injections in a joint for this reason. The deterioration is microscopic pitting of the tissue over the entire surface. The cadaver I disected while in college had the cortisone injections in his hip, and his connective tissue in that area looked like a sive in that hip. If you can avoid it, I would. Have you tried DMSO? This solvent is used topically (make sure you clean the area first very well). The most common use is for race horses! It heals as it decreases inflamation and it is a wonderful pain reliver. Personally I would not take the shots, The orthopedic surgon has offered it to me for my carpel tunnel syndrone, for my buldging discs in my spine and in my knee. I will always refuse the steroid therapy. Try going back to physical therapy with the use of DMSO, it works wonders. The down side of this solvent is it smells odd The second it touches your skin you taste it in your mouth. You have probably heard of MSM Condroitin and Glucosamine. MSM is a deritive of DMSO. DMSO stands for dymethelsolfoxide. Get it from a farm supply or a Vet. Good luck, Sorry you have hurt for so long!

Has your doc done an MRI to see if there is debris inside the joint? You would be better off having is scoped than the shots.

How long does it take for a Cortisone injection to work?

On Wednesday the 20th I was given 2 Cortisone injections, one in my right shoulder for a Rotator Cuff injury & the other into a joint at the base of my right thumb (which totally sucked by the way). They absolutely made the pain in both spots 5x's worse than before, especially in my thumb after the Lidocaine wore off. Its been 4 days now and my shoulder which I have been working out is so stiff & has started twitching again, I've iced both of them like I was told but that has only made it worse. My thumb is still really inflamed & painful, even the lightest touch sends shooting pain. How long after the injections should they work? If they don't work what is the next line of treatment?

What can you expect from a cortisone injection into the shoulder?

Cortisone injections can be painful but a lot of that depends not only on the skill of the provider giving the injection but also the amount of tissue that they have to go through to get to the target tissue. If you have a lot of scar tissue built up they will have to push through that which is more painful than if it wasn't there. The cortisone which is a very powerful anti-inflammatory drug is commonly mixed with an anesthetic drug such as lidocaine. Typically the anesthetic effect will wear off after a day or two. If the problem you are having is due to inflammation the cortisone injection should help but if it is not you may notice some initial benefit from the numbing effect of the anesthetic but after that it will most likely feel the way that it did prior to having the injection. After receiving the injection you need to rest the arm but you can perform gentle range of motion exercises. You should be just fine to perform your normal daily activities such as dressing, grooming activities, etc. You should avoid any overhead activities and heavy lifting, including any child care activities involving lifting. The injection should not make you drowsy and there is no reason that you have to stay in bed for any period of time.

Will Suboxone interfere with cortisone injections?

Hey, good for you for moving to Suboxone from heroin. It's a brave move. Forget those who would judge you, you're doing great! Don't let people stuck in their ego over their clean time make you feel bad in ANY way... Thats a shitty thing to do to someone.

It won't interfere with your cortisone injection. Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory, not an opiate, so you should be fine. Try not to worry.

You may need to take some Advil after, cortisone can hurt. Just so you don't get triggered .

What is your view on cortisone injection & dynasplint for better arm/shoulder mobility? My Marine son went to his surgeon who repaired a labrum tear in his shoulder 3 months ago. Is cortisone safe?

Honestly if it’s just 3 months of surgery it’s not necessary to inject steroid for mobility. Adequate physio will get him back the movements. Second steroid typically suppresses healing and the surgery done is to heal the labrum so its not wise to inject steroid. It’s safe to inject steroid in certain stiff shoulders but in his case it’s not advisable to inject steroid
