Cost Of Smart Card On Ns - Amsterdam

Would you recommend Uber in Amsterdam?

Uber is great and easy in Amsterdam. There is a flat fee from the airport to the center which is the same as a taxi, Within the city UberBlack is a bit cheaper than a taxi and UberPop is half price. UberPop is technically not allowed, but operates normally.New to Uber or never used it in euros before? Then you save €10! Enter in my promo code 'hwrvz' on your first ride (in euros). Install it on your smart phone and chose UberBlack or UberPop and summon your car.A convenient place to meet your driver is on Vertrekpassage (which is a street). Set your pickup point there. Then you could meet him upstairs at Departures 2 door or Departures 3 door. Take the escalator up to Departures directly after you exit customs. Don't go through the shopping mall towards the train station or the taxis. (There is a supermarket in that shopping mall).UberBlack is a final fare of €45 (€35 with discount) to the city center and is nicer than a regular taxi. UberPOP (our UberX) costs €25 (€15 with the discount). Then you get a friendly private guy in his private car. Note that there are not always UberPOP cars at the airport.  Despite what lazy journalists have reported, all Uber services are running in Amsterdam. Sit in the front if it's UberPOP. Passengers and drivers alike prefer it doesn't look like a taxi.

Does Uber accept pre-paid visa cards?

Here's a simple hack, you can use your debit orprepaid card for as long as it's Visa, Mastercard, Diners, JCB, American Express, Discover, UnionPay, etc. ... UPDATE 2/28/15: We've getting feedback that their prepaid cards don't work with Uber but (Visa or Mastercard) DEBIT cards are accepted.

How do you live cheaply in Amsterdam?

I'm quite certain that you will be able to manage, especially as an EU citizen you won't get hit by high tuition fees. Anyway, there are plenty of Italians living in Amsterdam, both working and students. According to the University of Amsterdam, average monthly expenditure is 900-1400 EUR. Source: Living expenses and money matters - UvA Students - University of AmsterdamYou should definitely enquire about the ability to receive some sort of funding. Contact the university and they'll tell you more.Your biggest expense will be rent. The trick is to rent a room that's not in the city centre. As a student you will be elligible for housing provided through the university, which is usually quite affordable. Because you're an international student, you will receive priority treatment. For more information, check this: Housing - University of Amsterdam The next post is food and drink. If you go out a lot, and you drink a lot, you will be broke...a lot. Either eat at uni or cook yourself. If you want to save some more money, get a Bonus Card at the Albert Heijn (supermarket) for extra discounts. Otherwise go to a Lidl or Aldi for cheaper prices. These two posts are what you control the most. You will have to pay for medical insurance and that's not really within your control, but then again it's also not a large expense. Don't get suckered into things like getting expensive phone contracts, buy a Lebara Sim Card and use Skype (the university will give you free high speed Internet where you live). It's definitely doable.

Is it better to buy a train ticket from Eindhoven to Delft by the Internet or at the train station?

Buy a 'single use chipcard' + the fare for the transit if you just need to go from Eindhoven to Delft. (And buy a second one if you need to go back or to Schiphol airport whence you leave.) This card will cost you an extra 1€ on top of the fare. Single-use chipcards You can buy these at any train station from a machine or the service desk. Since you're new to the country, just use the service desk and simply ask for a single fare to Delft. This will get you a single use chipcard + credit for the exact trip.If you suspect you'll make more use of public transportation (including busses, trams and other metropolitan trains) during your stay in the Netherlands, get yourself an anonymous 'OV-chipcard' (public transport smartcard). You can charge it with credit from which an amount will be subtracted on checking in and out from literally all public transport in the Netherlands. The check-in and -out points are contactless and to be found on the platform or near the entrance of trainstations or in the busses and trams (near the exits). The card itself will cost you € 7,50. A trick you need to remember though is that you need to check out and back in if you change public transport companies (e.g. from NS [national railway] to HTM [The Hague trams and busses]). OV-chipkaart - Aanvragen (you can switch from Dutch to English and vice versa near the search box at the top of the page)Your third option - which really only makes sense if Eindhoven-Delft is your only trip in the country - is to buy a ticket beforehand online and print it. This ticket will be linked to your name, a specific date and a specific trip. As far as I know it's not cheaper than buying the single use chipcard (but perhaps you don't pay the extra 1€). You'll need to bring the (printed) ticket with you and use one of the (sparse) optical check in-scanners (recognizable by a glass plate and a QR-code symbol) to validate it at the station before you enter the train.
