Cost To Paint A Car If Done By Self

How much does it cost to Paint a Car?

That's like asking "How much does a car cost?"

The better the preparation, the better the final result. Costs range all over the place, depending on the paint used and who paints it; as well as the degree of preparation (including disassembly) you do.

There is a place in Winter Haven FL, (Econo Car) that says, "Paint any car, $150." Across the street (at Arrington's), it'll cost you maybe $6000 for the same car. Depends on a lot of things. Really.

How much does it cost to paint a car yourself?

There is NO WAY that you can purchase materials for the prices mentioned by the other answerers let alone the cost of renting the proper tools. You also have to consider the expense of safety equipment so you don’t die or get sick while doing the work not to mention the filtering and exhausts so the overspray doesn’t paint your neighbors car, house or dog. That being said, you can paint your car with a $30 can of house paint and a roller but it won’t last very long and will look like shit.Oh, the cost of low end single stage paint, hardener, and reducer all by themselves will easily cost $300.A decent gun up to the task will be a minimum of $200.A 2 stage compressor with 60 gallon tank capable of 50psi@15cfm will be about $1000 or more, 50 feet of hose is around $100, a regulator and water trap will be another $150 (no, you can’t use the regulator on the compressor), the sandpaper and masking tape and wheel covers will be another $80, a NIOSH mask will be $80, and a tyvek suit (so the paint doesn’t absorb though the skin and give you cancer) is about $20.We still haven’t talked about explosion-proof lighting, filters and exhaust, and an extra rider on your homeowners insurance policy so it’ll be covered when you burn the place down.

How much do car paint jobs cost?

I've done one complete re-paint myself, and paid professionals to do another five. The cost is all over the board. The last time I did this was in 2002. I had a minty-mint, pristene 36,000 original miles '63 VW Beetle of which I was the third owner. I acquired it in a multi-car deal from a collector friend in Dallas, and he'd only had it very briefly himself. Alas, on a trip to the beach, the hood latch failed and the hood flew up, smashing the windshield, the hood, and severely creasing the cowling between the windshield and the hood opening. This couldn't be fixed without a complete repaint, so I decided to have a nearly concours quality job done; since I was going to lose the patina and the "all original" moniker, I wanted the end result to be as near to that as possible. The shop I used had previously done a multi-year 99-point concours restoration on a '63 Porsche convertible. They knew their stuff, and only do premium work. No corners cut, no sub-par materials. In the final breakdown, just the paint materials cost nearly $2000. The bodywork, repairing the cowling - which was flawless - was only $600.There was another $5000 in the rest of the job. That included partial disassembly of the car - loosen fenders, remove bumpers and exterior trim, remove windshield and rear window. Then the cycle started on getting the car "ready for color" - sand, shoot primer coat, shoot guide coat, block sand to find low spots, fill, repeat - until the car was 100% smooth and flat. Then final cleaning, anti-static to keep it from attracting dust, and shoot color. Which then had to be wet-sanded, and re-shot a second time, and wet-sanded again before final buffing.A this was a restoration-quality job, we shot with a single-stage enamel from Sikkens that was a perfect match for the original paint. There was also another $1000 or so for misc parts - replacing chrome that wasn't "good enough", new window and door seals, repair to the canvas sunroof, etc.It really looked like a brand new '63 Beetle. No clue what the "paint the car" part of the restoration on the '63 Porsche cost me, but I do recall that the paint materials alone were over $3k. It was a bare-metal restoration, fully disassembled, all prior paint removed by dipping, rust removed by reverse electrolysis, new metal welded in, etc. In the disassembly, we found one 2" by 3" patch of original paint under the dash, and used it to color-match against in a custom color run, which may have added to the cost.

How much would it cost to paint a car pink?

There is no one standard rate among all body shops. Some places advertise a paint job for ridiculously low prices like $300 for example. The problem with those place is the car comes out looking like it just received a $300 paint job.

It depends on the paint. There is a big difference between getting a regular versus a metallic-paint job and if there is also a coat or multiple coats of clear coat on top. It also depends on if any body work is being performed at the same time. That will cost extra as well. For a decent, basic paint job, without any body work, expect to pay at least $1500 ( and that is just for the outside...as noted by the post above, if you wish to have the panels under the seams painted ( which is important if you are painting the car a different colour ) that is extra as well ). Once you start adding metallic-paint, clear coat, and body work, expect the price to rise significantly.

Visit some body shops in your area and let them give you an estimate ( the estimate should be free and usually given on the spot ). Also ask some family and friends regarding recommendations. The quality of work between 2 shops can be drastic. It pays to do your homework first.

Why does it cost so much to repaint a car?

Well, there’s repaints and there’s repaints. You can get a repaint for about $300. It will look shiny, but there will be flaws here and there and over time you will see problems appear, like one repaint I had where big patches of paint started coming off the car after about 3 years. Then there’s the $10,000 repaint where great care is taken in prepping the surface before painting. The car goes into a special paint booth and only the best paint is used, probably using a primer under the final paint job. If the painter knows his stuff your car will have paint that looks like glass and even has some “depth” to it. Also, masking is done very carefully so no paint falls on parts that were not meant to be painted, like the tires, bumpers and windows. And a good repaint can cost way more than $10,000 depending on the car and how good you want the final outcome to be. In some cases they may disassemble the entire car, paint all the parts then reassemble the car for a factory finish.Go to Maaco and check a repaint there, and then go to a car show with some nice vintage cars and check the paint on the cars there. The time and materials for a good paint job is expensive but worth it — you just have to figure what your car is worth when you decide how much to spend on a repaint.

How much does it cost to paint your whole car?

A $400 paint job is not decent in the Bay Area. You'll get a lot of rust from living near the ocean. A $2000-$3000 paint job is more appropriate. You can get free estimates from auto body shops in your area. Get estimates from 5 or more places. Look them up in the phone book or the internet.
For example, here are some in San Francisco:

How much would it cost to paint a black car maroon?

Your choices are to go to Earl Schieb or Maaco and get a cheapo paint job which you will be ashamed of forever more, or pay about half to as much as the entire value of the car to have it done right. You will never recover the cost of the paint job, a car only depreciates under ordinary circumstances. You are better off trading it in and getting a maroon car.

A quick Maaco type synthetic enamel paint job tends to run about $250, but it looks like crap unless YOU do a lot of prep work before hand and even then, it only looks good for a while as it's done with the cheapest paint out there).

Just the materials cost for a decent repaint will actually cost double that figure, and then you have to add the labor to do it right. Expect about $1000-$1500 to respray in the same color, and $1500-3000 to change colors, depending on quality of mateials, and level of prep and detail (door jambs, under hood and trunk, etc).

The current Kelly Blue Book value of your car [assuming 50K miles] is roughly $1825.

Trade it.

How much does it cost to paint a classic car?

It depends on what the condition of the car is. Does it have any body damage ? Rust ? If you are going with a dark color there will be more prep involved because darker colors show flaws more. I just had my ' 67 Mustang done in House of Kolor black for $ 3700 and it had very little damage ( door dings ) and the price included True Flaming the hood and the back between the taillights, replacing the windshield and back window rubber and installing a B&M shifter. The appraisal I got when it was finished determined it would cost $ 8000 to re-paint if anything happened to it. The appraiser fixxes up and sells cars himself and he's gotten some of them painted at MAACO for about $1500, but from what I've seen of Maaco it's a crapshoot on whether or not you'll get a good job or if it comes out looking like painted 60 grit sandpaper

How much does it cost to paint your car another color?

There's a huge range depending on how you want it to look when it's done. If you go the cheap route, like Maaco, man will you be sorry. Yes, they can paint an entire car for around $400 . . . but people will be asking if you did it yourself because it will look so terrible. Maaco also offers "higher end" paint jobs for up to $2,000, which is still cheap compared to competition, but their paint work is still garbage, just stay away from them.

Get it done by a decent body shop, if you don't know a reputable shop in your area then head to a dealer with a body shop, they're usually at least OK.

Expect to pay around $3,500 - $4,000 for a good job that includes things like door jambs, under hood and under trunk. Bear in mind, if you don't get a good paint job and/or you don't do the door jambs/under hood stuff, you'll drastically lower the resale value of your car.

If you'd like to add anything, like a racing stripe, now's the perfect time to do it. If it's just a stripe, it won't cost much extra, maybe an extra $200. Or . . . go crazy with color change, ghost flames, and a mural on the side with six layers of clear coat for $12,000.
