Costs Of Owning A Vacant House Whilst Living Elsewhere

If you are living in a house where drugs are being sold and are there while the house is raided by the police, will you likely be arrested if you have no involvement? And if yes, on what charges and is a conviction likely?

Most of the time, raids are not a spur of the moment operation. A LOT of investigation goes into them, and they are meticulously planned and orchestrated.  The police often know who will be in the home at the time, but sometimes they do not know. When a house gets raided, usually everyone present at the time is brought to the police station. If your name is on the list of people who the case has been built around (either through undercover buys or informants), you are pretty likely to be charged, depending on if it can be shown you had control over the drugs or what was going on inside. These investigations can last weeks or months, and if you are present at the time, it may have been why the raid happened when you were there. The facts will be reviewed by a states attorney who will decide whether - or if - you are to be charged. Charges could include possession of a controlled substance or possession with intent to deliver, or delivery of a controlled substance. It all depends on the statutes in your state, and to what degree of involvement you are tied.  Is a conviction likely? It all depends. The prosecution will have to prove you acted "knowingly and willingly".  If they cannot do so, a conviction is unlikely. If they can, well ...But, if you just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, chances are once things get sorted out, you will be released without charges.  In either case, I recommend you contact an attorney as early as possible. But before any of the above happens, maybe you should look for another place to live.

How is living on yacht compared to a townhouse/condo?

Has anyone lived on a 40 foot +/- yacht? I see them outside my office window all day and it seems like a relaxing life. Are they really too small to live(single) comfortably and how fast do they depreciate? A quick seach revealed that a 40 footer cost more or less the same as a condo or small house, but what are the upsides of living on a boat(other than being mobile)?

How do people afford a million dollar house in vancouver?

It's unaffordable. Inheritance made it possible for some. Truth is that prices were bid up by Chinese and other minority of foreign investors desperate to unload their suitcases of money.Prices do not keep relations with income level. While SF and NY real estate markets are over $1 mil, their income levels make it possible. It is common to hear high tech workers in Silicon Valley or IB bankers reporting income over 200k avg, it is not common to see these figures in Vancouver, not even near. Vancouver has in fact the lowest average income in large Canadian cities. Some families do in fact do quite an effort gathering money and mortgaging their lives for the next 30 yrs. Many decided to settle with small apartments or townhouses, even townhouses are easily over $700k.

Why isn't everyone buying cheap houses in Detroit as an investment?

I perceive detroits market to be cheap for the wrong reasons. Dont foresee it going back up in value anytime soon

Should you buy a house while in the military?

With the instability of the market, the difficulty of getting a loan if you have a house sitting empty, or even going up for rent, I think until you have a post that you are confident you will remain at for 5+ years, renting is better. The closing costs and upkeep, potential pitfalls, just don't warrant buying over renting short term. There are an awful lot of military couples in financial distress because they can't sell a house they bought three years ago and are being foreclosed, unable to buy or even rent another home, have now been relocated, etc.

Your parents probably have rental property in their area, which is a whole different animal than renting out a house while one of you is living in Texas (or Germany) with the other deployed to Afghanistan.

These financial difficulties can affect your military career, security clearance, and spouse's employment options. Weigh them all carefully.
