Once, long ago, I heard a legend that men's clothing sizes are standardized across different brands. Furthermore, their sizes are meaningfully assigned, and they are constant --- for example, if a pair of pants was size 33x34, a customer could be sure that the waist was 33 inches around and the inseam was 34 inches long.As far as I know, when God cast out Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, He cursed Eve with painful childbirth and desire for her husband. He didn't also say, "You will be forced to go from store to store in search of a pair of slacks that fit, knowing that your search is ultimately meaningless because a size medium means something different to every designer, and also because today's size medium will be tomorrow's extra small."Seriously, fashion people: I was a size 6 in high school, and after gaining weight in college, I am now a size 0 --- when I can even find grown-up clothes that are small enough for me. What's up with that?Other things I have a terrible time finding, but cherish for years when I can get them:Dresses, skirts, and slacks with pockets. It just doesn't seem possible to find a basic item that hasn't been ruffled, be-laced, be-jeweled, stenciled, dip-dyed, or otherwise made annoyingly unique.Websites with intelligent item cataloging. You would not believe how many times I have used the "hem length" filter on a page of women's dresses, selected "knee-length," and gotten page after page of dresses that hit mid-thigh, mid-calf, or ankle. Unbelievable. This should not be a difficult thing to do well.Dresses, skirts, and slacks made for petite (i.e., short with a small waist) women who have big hips. Things have gotten better with the midi dress trend, but this is still a very recent development --- starting at about age 12, it was a never-ending battle to find jeans that were big enough in the hips but didn't trail on the ground. Designers just don't seem to realize that there is more than one hip-to-height ratio in the world.
