Could A Reputable Professional Breeder Create A New Breed That You Can Ride Over Several

Hobby Breeder vs. Backyard Breeder vs. Professional Breeder...?

I noticed that a poster here thought that anyone who bred dogs only occasionally thought that everyone here on YA considered them to be a backyard breeder.

So now I'm curious... If a breeder is small time, not having a proper "kennel" set up, only has a few dogs, breeds occasionally and selectively chooses proper sire and dam, does all the genetic testing to their breed, shows in a variety of venues, including confirmation and what ever that breed was originally bred to do, would you consider this a backyard breeder? Does the fact this breeder does not run a large scale, professional kennel lead you to assume that breeder is a backyard breeder?

Do you think that small hobby breeders, who often have "real" jobs and who do all that a reputable breeder should do, but often on a much smaller scale, are still backyard breeders?

I was just wondering what most people here in the dog section thought of this.

How would one create a new dog breed [please read before jumping to conclusions]?

The first step is to decide on a breed standard. From that, you have to find a male and a female that will produce the breed standard you are looking for (or as close to it as possible)- you also to have them health tested to make sure you aren't starting a new breed with horrible genetic disorders. Once the breeding is done, you have to evaluate the litter to see if you got the type of dog you wanted- (keep in mind, that many times, you can't really tell what the dog will look llike as an adult until the puppies are around a year old.) Then, you have to take that dog, and another dog (not related to the first)- that will get you closer to a breed standard and repeat the process. You continue this process until you have 2 dogs that are of the breed standard you want that can mate and reproduce what you are looking for. (Just like you a really good idea what the pups of a male golden and a female golden are going to look like.)

Creating a new breed isn't about just tossing 2 dogs together, shake them up, and "voila" you have a new breed- it takes generations of dogs and many years (I would guess decades, if not longer) to get a new breed.

It's one of the reasons these "designer dogs" are not considered "breeds"- you can't breed a labradoodle to a labradoodle to get a litter of labradoodles- you still have to breed the lab to the poodle to get the mix involved.

Agree or Disagree? The shepherdoodle breeders aren't doing anything wrong because eventually they will create a new breed of German Shepperd?

You keep asking the same question.
Eventually, after hundreds or thousands of generations, a new breed of dog could be developed. The problem is that these "breeders" aren't producing dogs to develop a new breed. If they were developing a new breed, they wouldn't constantly sell off all of their first generation puppies, there would be some sort of end point or goal, there would be some effort at standardization and they wouldn't be calling their mutts "breeds" and making false claims about these dogs.
They're not developing new breeds, they only want money.

Savannah Cat Breeding QUESTION's Help =] ??

I'm sorry but it's clear you know next to nothing about breeding. We are not here to promote breeding of cats which no doubt you want to do for money.
Cats do not need to breed. Find other ways of making money. Cause if you are going to do it properly you will find you don't just get money, you get complications as any professional breeder will tell you, plus you don't just breed her to the max, that's just senseless, stupid and very short-sighted.

Leave the breeding to the professionals.

As a pet owner, you can add to the overpopulation problem or help end it. Don't fool yourself into thinking that if you find a home for each of your pet's offspring you avoid adding to the number of homeless pets. Actually, you've only eliminated potential homes for other waiting puppies and kittens. Only so many responsible, caring homes exist, and finding a home for one of your pet's offspring inevitably dooms some other cat or dog.

As ANY professional breeder weill tell you, they DON'T make money. It costs them to do this.

You may want to think some more on another money plan, this isn't it.

What is the AKC guideline for breeding [mother-father,father,daughter etc.?

Animal Artwork is correct. The AKC does NOT create breed standards. They publish and list accordingly this info for purpose of registration in accordance to the individual breed clubs. These unfortunately can lead to bad standards by eliminating genetic colors etc that are in fact part of the true make up of the breed. As for Inbreeding and line breeding, it is best left to those who are professional breeders. It is still done and successfully if one knows what they are doing.
