Can someone help me with my English name? My Chinese name is 马静怡, which is "Chingi" in Wade-Giles romanization, But "Chingi" sounds quite strange. Can some native speakers help me to make "Chingi" sound more beautiful?
I agree that “Chingi” is less than desirable: it seems too close to the insulting word “Ch..nk”. Nitpicking detail: in Wade-Giles 靜怡 is spelled Ching Yi.If you want to keep a romanized name, perhaps you could use tonal spelling (GR, Gwoyeu Romatzyh), Maa Jinqyi. This spelling has mnemonic value for any curious foreigner who wants to pronounce your name correctly:Maa: the -aa- stands for 3rd tone (the hollowed-out bottoms are a reminder that this is the lowest and longest of all tones)Jinq: the hollow last stroke of the -q- implies that 4th tone is short and abruptly fallingYi: the hollow second stroke of the -y- is reminder that this is a rising tone.There is no real conflict with Hanyu Pinyin: the GR form can just be your nickname.Otherwise, Gabrielle Martin has provided several usable suggestions (to which I would add “Jenny”). The only problem with many of these names is that they are a dime a dozen (much too common).If you want to stand out from thousands and thousands of other mainlanders with very similar Hanyu Pinyin names and be easily remembered, however, the GR spelling would be a good choice.
