Counterfeit Banknote Detector

How does a counterfeit note detector work?

Are you asking about an "app" or one of the counterfeit detector markers? The markers react with starch that's in regular paper, but not in the paper used to print most currencies.  Alas, counterfeiters can just bleach $1 bills, then reprint them as $100 bills, and those markers won't do you any good.Source: Counterfeit banknote detection pen

What is the most efficient counterfeit money detector?

Your fingers’ sense of touch are better than most every other technical solution for detecting fake banknotes, at least in the United States, which uses a very unique security paper for its notes. I’ve seen what look like perfect fake $20 notes, with all the security features such as watermark, thread, color shifting inks, etc. all nicely reproduced. But the instant you touch one of them, you feel something is wrong. The paper is limp, not crisp. It lacks the distinctive feel of genuine notes. No security feature will prevent counterfeiting if commercial establishments continue to rely upon brain-dead detectors like starch pens instead of educating the staff on how to use their brains and senses to detect fakes.

How do ATMs detect counterfeit notes?

Counterfeit notes come in a range of qualities, from cheap photocopies to a Superbill, which even experts have difficulties identifying. ATMs come with various counterfeit detection methods. The methods they employ vary from model to model, and would need to be updated when new types of bills are introduced into circulation. I’m not an expert on detection methods, but I imagine that at the very least, ATMs would employ optical, magnetic, and blacklight (UV) based detectors. But the details of these methods would certainly be considered a highly sensitive trade secret, for fear that the counterfeiters would learn to circumvent them. It’s important to remember that ATM aren’t designed to be foolproof — that would be too expensive, and probably not really possible. Instead, their job it to make it hard enough to fool, that it would be too much of a hassle to be practical for any professional counterfeiter. So for example, the aforementioned superbills only become worth the printing costs once you print many millions of them. Laundering that quantity through ATMs, though theoretically possible, would be a logistical nightmare with huge overheads, and the ringleaders would likely get caught long before the whole load could be laundered.UPDATE:It would seem that the question was updated. Originally it was: “Can ATMs detect counterfeit notes”To address some of the other answers. Many ATMs indeed can’t receive paper money from users. However, some can (seen at least in the US and Israel). My answer refferes to these more advanced ATM machines.

How do you check for a counterfeit Indian Rupee Note?

Ways to check whether Indian currency note is real or fake:Front side1)     First see whether the printed currency amount exists or not.(Don’t take any note of 30 Rs. of say 70 Rs.)2)     Next see whether if you can see picture of Mahatma Gandhi in the white space provided.(Well the both the faces should match in the mirror images)3)     Look for the strip to the right side of the currency amount number; the words written are “RBI Bharat”.4)     When you see the water image of Mahatma Gandhi look for the currency amount again.5)     Then on the right end of the note where a color strap is given look for the currency amount by focusing it parallel to the light source.6)     Look for the matching serial number on the top-right corner and bottom-left corner.Back Side1)     Count if there are 15 languages or not.2)     Look for the minted year at the center bottom of the note(IF the year is printed it should be on or above 2009).Last but the most important of all!Fold the note into eight equal parts and now stamp on the note hardly with the paper weight if the the glasses of Mahatma Gandhi are broken then it’s a fake one!PS Except for the last one rest all points is true to the best of my knowledge.

Can you put counterfeit money in an ATM?

That’s going to depend on the quality of the counterfeit currency which someone tries to pass through an ATM. Generally there are two ways which the bank will authenticate deposits via ATM.There are ATM’s which accept bills directly, in which case each bill is validated as it is inserted one at a time into the ATM machine. In this case the counterfeit currency needs to be able to pass the device authenticating the bills as they enter the ATM.There are ATM’s which you stuff the cash into an envelope and then insert the whole envelope into the machine and enter the amount of cash you are depositing to the ATM on the screen. In this case the envelope is marked to tie it to the deposit transactions. At some later date / time a bank employee will extract the bills and count the deposit most likely through a bill counting machine with a counterfeit detection function. In this case the counterfeit currency needs to be able to pass the counterfeit detection in the counting machine used to count the deposit. In both of these cases if it’s a single bill the bank will write it off as a stray and just reject the bill and decrement the deposit. If a significant number of bills are found to be counterfeit after being deposited at a US bank then there is a possibility that the bank could report the incident to the US Secret Service who police currency counterfeiting.
