Craigslist .is It A Scam

Craigslist!!!? is this a SCAM help guys!!?

100% scam.

There is no job. There is only a scammer trying to steal your hard-earned money.

The next email will be from another of the scammer's fake names and free email addresses pretending to be the "secretary/assitant/accountant" and will demand you cash a large fake check sent on a stolen UPS/FedEx billing account number and send the "traveling expense" money, in cash, via Western Union or moneygram back to the scammer. When your bank realizes the check is fake, it bounces and you get the real life job of paying back the bank for the bounced check fees and all the bank's cash you sent to the overseas scammer.

6 "Rules to follow" to avoid most fake jobs:
1) Job asks you to use your personal bank account and/or open a new one.
2) Job asks you to print/mail/cash a check or money order.
3) Job asks you to use Western Union or moneygram in any capacity.
4) Job asks you to accept packages and re-ship them on to anyone.
5) Job asks you to pay visas, travel fees via Western Union or moneygram.
6) Job asks you to sign up for a credit reporting or identity verification site.

If you google "fake check scam", "money order fraud Western Union", "fake driving job" or something similar, you will find hundreds of posts from victims and near-victims of this type of scam.

What are some common Craigslist scams?

The biggest scan is about payment, whereby somebody promises upfront to wire you money or send you money via PayPal.  Never accept wire or PayPal payments.  These types of payments require you to share personally-identifiable information (PII), such as your address, driver's license number, bank routing and account number.  These types of PII are ideal fodder for identity theft. For anything up to a few hundred dollars (or locally-equivalent currency) I would recommend accepting only cash. For something more than that (e.g. $1,000+) I would recommend accepting only a cashier's check generated at the buyer's bank with you present.  Unless you are there at the bank and witness the buyer requesting the cashier's check, you cannot be sure the check presented won't bounce. Also for higher-price items (e.g. electronics, jewelry), meet the buyer in a public place (e.g. gas station, coffee shop).  Unfortunately there have been cases where Craigslist sellers have been hurt and/or killed for something as ridiculous as a laptop.  A recent scam I saw was for fake ads of rental properties.  The rental properties in question are real, but the scammer stole the ad by just copying the pictures and wording and made it their own.  The scam consisted, similar to the payment scam, of requesting PII upfront, in order to view the property. This is the procedure I follow as a Craigslist seller after getting responses to an ad:I confirm my approximate location (cross-streets), not exact addressEven if the buyer says to just email or text them the address, I won't at first.Once we've agreed on a date and time, I ask the buyer to call me when/before s/he heads over.At that point, once I've spoken to a real human, I give them my address (either on the phone or text it right after, so Google Maps can just pick it up (on a smartphone)If someone refuses to call or just wants the information to be shared via text/email, that's a warning flag.If the buyer is in any way uncooperative or rude or impatient before this call or on it, the deal is off, and I cease any further communicationMy phone screening method isn't fool-proof, but if you have some common sense and listen to your gut, you can get a gut feel for the person on the phone.

Craigslist posting scam?

This is a scam that can land you in prison. You will never get paid

You know all of the people who come on Y!A complaining how they got scammed and lost money by a fake job offer, fake puppy, fake car, etc? Who do you think places those ads? The scammers? Of course not, they look for naive people to post these fraudulent ads for them, then when the person who got scammed contacts the police, the investigation leads right back to you as your phone was used for the confirmation number, your email address was used to place these ads

NOBODY would ever pay a person $500 to place 50 ads. If this were at all legit they would hire a temp through an agency for 2 hours at $10/hour to place those ads. You can place 50 ads in less than 2 hours

Never agree to work for anyone you have never met in person at their office. And posting a Work Wanted ad on Craigslist is the easiest way to get scammed as no legitimate employers even look there

Craigslist job scam or sort of legit?

I did a job for about a month on and off so about two weeks. It is scetchy to me but I also feel like it might not be a scam. I got paid through PayPal and never got asked for an ID or anything like that. Possible scam? If I use the money it doesn’t let me. But is it possible to send fake money into PayPal? The job is posting ads on Craigslist for houses and apartments.

Is this a scam? Craigslist and Google wallet?

Hello everyone, yesterday I found an offer on craigslist; a 2007 ford edge going for $4100. I emailed the seller and she told me the transaction would be done through Google wallet. I've read enough stories to know this would normally be a scam, but today she called me to let me know that she forwarded my information to Google to begin the process. I told her about howthis is very similar to aa lot of scams and she pointed out the fact that she actually called me. I realized that in all the complaints I read, I don't recall anyone actually speaking to the seller. Some sellers even make up excuses why they can't talk so now I'm not so sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Driver job on craigslist is this a scam?

I did not read it all.
But this is how the 50 year old nigerian scam works.
They send you a check.
You will deposit it.
They will request money from you - probably by wire.
The check they sent you will bounce.
You will never hear from them again.

Getting paid to post ads on Craigslist, is it a scam?

100% SCAM and one that will land you in jail and thousands of dollars in debt. NOBODY pays a person to post FREE ads on Craigslist unless they are doing something illegal and will get you to take the fall and go to jail since YOU posted the ads from YOUR computer using YOUR phone number to verifiy the account

There are NO apartments for rent. These scammers copy pictures off realtor.com or Zillow.com then repost them trying to claim they are the owner. When a victim contacts them wanting to rent the place, they claim they are out of town/overseas/serving in the military and will FedEx the keys if they send a deposit (ranging from $500-1000). When the victim who sends the money doesn't get the keys (or gets a fake key that doesn't belong to the property) they call the police. The police investigate and see that you posted the ads and they arrest you. In addition to jail time, you will also be forced to pay restitution to every victim who lost money to the ads you posted. So if 10 people fall for the ads and each sent $1000, you are the one who will have to pay them all back and will have your wages and tax returns garnished for years until this is paid off

If you have posted ANY ads, immediately delete them and delete your account.

Scams: Why is Craigslist full of scammers?

It's the cheapest way to advertise to people. By that, I mean you can scam people by posting free advertisement. The only cost to the scam is the scammer time. Also, for a scammer, it is anonymous. They can create fake persona, fake number, fake websites, ...Now, aside from being a godsend to scammers, Craigslist is also full of legitimate people that are using the world biggest marketplace to buy and sell good/services.
