A common term for tacking on charges, which is far too common on he internet is sometimes called "Forced Continuity" often starting with a $2 trial shipping fee that can turn into a later $89 purchase charge.

As long as their find print in the Terms and Conditions of the site spell out those details it may be legal.

I would be more demand of a refund, you only threaten to get a charge-back from your card company, it would be easier if they did provide a refund, of course you want to read all the fin print on the site.

If you focus on the fact that in most cases customer service is the nearest thing to an oxymoron without being one, you will have a competitive edge from day one. A finance officer, a great friend of mine now who has built a great career and is a CFO, was given the role of collections - essentially sorting out bad debts for a major international communications company which charged people monthly and quarterly. The way it was explained to him was that he had to metaphorically beat people up until they paid up. Instead he decided that the people who had signed up for the service had probably done so because they wanted to have it. Perhaps they had temporary issues, or perhaps they were really feckless. If he could work that out, he could treat the collections calls as sales opportunities for the former and create the best way of dealing with the latter.He built a basic offer for people who were more than three months in arrears - if they would go to direct debit for each monthly payment, and paid off an agreed percentage of the arrears each month in that payment, they could continue with the service. He reduced bad debts by over 80% within six months, and the company found that the people who saw themselves as benefiting from how their debts were treated signed up for more services. (The feckless were identified and treated in the normal way.)You can just imagine the difference treating a bad debt call as a sales call made - and what lessons that might have for a customer service company.

Philippines. Both Indians and Philippinos can be hard to understand, but Philippinos have less of an accent. Also they are nicer, a lot of Indians will get mad at you if you don't understand them or disagree w/ them on something. They will get bitchy with you and say "let me transfer you to my supervisor" then put you on hold for 10 minutes then cut off the line. The best way around talking with someone from outside of the country is to press "2" (or "7" or whatever) for Spanish. Then, start talking English with them. EVERY time I have done this, they speak perfect English back to me. I asked one girl where she was working out of and she said Chicago. Others have said New York or Texas. For whatever reason they don't outsource those to Spanish-speaking countries but use bilingual people in the U.S. Ironic but it has worked for me every time.
