What is the history of Pennsylvania State?

It all started when a guy name William Penn was granted a fract of land in the new world by the English King to pay back a debt. William Penn grew weary of the bad rap his Quaker buddies (The Society of Friends) were getting, so he used this land, calling it Pennsylvania or literally Penn’s woods, and making it a safe haven for the Quakers. This led to relatively loose laws regarding religion in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. These laws transcended religion to include ethnicity which attracted a lot of immigration, especially from modern day Germany. This created a early melting pot of cultures in Pennsylvania, making a very distinct cultural identity for the Pennsylvanians.Suddenly, it’s 1776, and some cool guys are meeting in Philadelphia. These guys, called the Continental Congress, do a lot of stuff for the revolution, coming from all 13 colonies, except for Georgia who cared, but cared more about not dying from the Spanish to care. Either way, they draft the Continental Army under George Washington, as well as the Declaration of Independence, officially declaring independence from Britain. The Revolutionary War ends in 1783, and in 1787, George Washington and company decide to make America Great Again, with a newfangled “Constitution”. Naturally, they make this new Constitution in the city where nations are made, Philadelphia. After this, President George Washington needs a capital, so he chooses a little area between Virginia and Maryland. Naturally, this new city takes some time to build, so Philadelphia is used as a temporary capital city for 10 years. After that, Pennsylvanian history isn’t all that interesting. We kind of loss our significance for a long time, until the Civil War. During (and before) the Civil War, Pennsylvania was the borderline between a slave’s life in chains and their life as free men. That said, Pennsylvania was a home for a lot of abolitionist, such as Frederick Douglass, and one of the most important stops on the Underground Railroad. During the war, we were the farthest extent of the Confederate offensive, ending that offensive at the Battle of Gettysburg, labeling a turning point in the war.Again, after this, Pennsylvanian history isn’t very interesting, besides being a swing state in many elections. You should check Google if you want to know more than this, as there is a lot of history involved.

What are the different states near Washington DC?

Washington, the City, is located within the Federal District of Columbia. The two abutting states are Maryland and Virginia. With a very short drive you can be in the lovely bayside towns of Delaware, which has no sales tax and is a shoppers paradise. To the West, a bit further west, is, of course West Virginia and further yet are South Carolina to the south and Pennsylvania to the North. DC is a great place to start a vacation no matter what you want to do or see. These other states will round-out a fantastic American experience. North Carolina is a half a day drive but I did not mention it before only because it’s not a favorite of mine.

Is there a difference between a state senator and US senator ?

Like the Congress of the United States, every state has its own legislature. Every state except Nebraska has two houses in its legislature.

Every state has two senators that it sends to Washington; but every state decides for itself how many members there will be in the state legislatures.

US Senators deal with national issues. State Senators work in the individual state legislatures that meet in each state's capital, and only work on state issues. Your state legislature meets in Harrisburg, and every district in the state has its own representatives and senators.

Hope this answer helps. Cheers, mate.

Is Pennsylvania culturally closer to New York or Washington, D.C., and its area (Virginia, Maryland, etc.)?

The answer is ‘it depends.’ Philadelphia is culturally closer to New York City as it is a major city with the same attitudes and problems. Pittsburgh is more a midwest city than NYC or even DC. The other parts of Pennsylvania, mostly rural of small town, has been described as culturally closer to Alabama than any other states nearby.

What's the difference between Penn State and Upenn?

Okay,

The University of Pennsylvania (Upenn) is an ivy league school that is not related to the state of PA. It is very selective, and tutuions are extremely high. Acceptance Rate is at about 17%, only a little higher than Yale. It is based in Philly.

The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State, PSU) is the state school of PA, and they are based in State College, PA, around the center of the state. They also operate 21 other cmapuses around the state to accomadate all students. In the town of State college, and every where else in PA, the talk is Penn State Nittany Lions Football. They ahve an amazing football team, the largest stadium in the US, and the largest fanbase anywhere. It is a lot of fun for students. Everybody wants to go there, it is the most popular school in the US, recieving over 100,000 applications last year. They select about 30% of all applications, and if you don't make main campus (State College) first year, you can go to a different campus, and go to main for the last two years of college. It is also a lot cheaper than UPenn.

Good Luck!

What is the difference between the state constitution and the US constitution?

The precise differences naturally depend on the individual state, but in general, state constitutions tend to be much longer and more detailed. Where as the US Constitution provides a general framework and includes specifics only where necessary, state constitutions tend to enshrine A lot of detailed law that you might expect to find in a statute. They both have similar importance, but on a different scale. Obviously the US Constitution is superior to other facets of federal law, and also superior to the Constitutions and laws of the states. State constitutions take precedence over state statutes and other aspects of a state law framework, mirroring the relationship of the federal Constitution to federal law, while being a subordinate to it.State constitutions tend to be amended far more often than the federal one. Often they can be amended by the legislature or by direct voting on an initiative, and often with a simple majority. But such mechanics vary by state. Not only that, but in contrast to the federal Constitution which has been in force with only the occasional tweak since 1789, state constitutions historically get completely rewritten, often by constitutional convention, relatively often. I live in Missouri, and I am almost certain off the top of my head that we are operating under a 1945 Constitution, or at least the core of that constitution which has been amended probably hundreds of times. That is very new compared to the actual age of the state, which was incorporated into the union in 1821. I think we've had at least three constitutions total.
