Dinner ideas and recipes for a cold miserable day...?

At our house we sometimes have homemade chicken and noodles (not soup, mine is much thicker!), with mashed potatoes, corn or green beans, and homemade biscuits. YUM!
I like to use boneless, skinless chicken breasts, but you can use whatever meat you prefer. I cook the chicken in a pot with onion, celery, carrots, and a bouquet garni bag (spice/herb bag). I save the netting that onions and lemons come in, then I place the veggies and bouquet garni in this netting, close with a bread tie, drop in the broth, and when done cooking, I just drain this netting a bit and toss. I don't have to fish out pieces of veggies this way. I also add some chicken bouillon cubes for added flavor or buy already made chicken stock or broth to cook the chicken in for more flavor.
I make homemade noodles or you can buy frozen Reames noodles.
Once the meat is done (about 2 hours), I remove the meat and netting, strain the broth, put it back in pot (I wash the pot before returning broth), bring it to a boil, add noodles and cook about 25 minutes. I add the meat that I've shredded into bite-sized pieces and allow to warm up, than add some turmeric (not much) for color and some dried parsley flakes (maybe 1/4 cup or so). As you can tell, I don't use a specific recipe.
While the meat is cooking you can pare and cut your potatoes and place in a pan of salted water until ready to cook. The biscuits can be made up all except for the milk so that it is ready to finish off before placing in oven about 20 minutes before your noodles are done. The potatoes can be mashed prior to adding the chicken back to the pot.
If making a vegetable, then have it ready to go, too. In this way everything can be done without you feeling overwhelmed.
My chicken and noodles are wet enough to have some broth, but not soupy. I always make enough for extras for the next day's lunch, if they last that long as these are my kids' favorite food!
The favorite way to have corn here is the frozen kind. Our favorite way to eat green beans is when they are cooked (simmered) with onions, and cooked, crumbled bacon is added after the beans have been drained, and then real butter is also added to the pot. Delicious!
I am making tacos for dinner tonight as it will be 67 degrees here, not so cold. I made an apple crisp last night that we will have for dessert tonight. This from apples I picked at an orchard.
Hope you come up with a fun and delicious meal!

How long does food last when you meal prep?

What are you making?

Cutting veggies and such and prepping that way is a Great time saver. You can also boil noodles ahead of time and then just give them a quick dip in boiling water, or toss with hot sauce.

Meats if you depending on how you plan to serve/prepare them either start them thawing, marinating or get them cut up. They will last just fine for a week.

Casseroles again will last fine for a week.

If you give us a menu of what you plan on making for the week we can sure help you get the fine tuning of it down. Many here meal plan, or have prepped for cafe's/resturants.

What is the best preservative to make a cake last for as long as possible?

Cakes have a shelf life of maximum 2–3 days and 3–4 days maximum if properly fridged. Still there’re somethings you can do, which have worked for me and for people I know.Use less diary: Be it butter, milk, cheese, cream, sour cream, condensed milk.Bake cakes with citric flavor: orange/lemon etc.Alcohol: Fruit cakes sometimes can stay up to a year, which is why they are chosen as the bottom layer of wedding cake. Add booze to the recipe. It will enhance the flavor by day!Avoid toppings of any kind. Store them airtight!
