My direct tv remote isn't working?
It sounds like the remote was inadvertently programmed for TV mode while in the dtv switch position. To reset the remote to the factory default, do the following: Put the switch in the dtv position Press and hold the mute and select buttons at the same time until the switch lights flash Release mute and select buttons, and enter (one at a time) 9 8 1 After resetting your remote, if you continue to set it up to also control your TV, make sure you follow all the on-screen instruction, including putting the switch in the TV position.

The problem is almost certainly the software in the receiver. You can get your DirectTV receiver back to working status by doing the following: First start a hardware reset of your DirectTV receiver. Depending on your DirectTV receiver model receiver you can either: 1. Unplug and replug the power cord on your DirectTV box. 2. Press the little red button inside the compartment at the lower right hand corner of your DirectTV box. When the first blue screen appears, enter the numbers 0 2 4 6 8 from your DirectTV remote. This will inititiate a software reset on you receiver, which will take a couple minutes. After the software finishes downloading, your box will automatically go through a normal restart. After the restart completes, you should be back online with the ability to access all your channels from your remote.

I need a little more information. What is the receiver type and what does the remote model number say on the top left of the remote. I have a feeling your receiver is set for RF (radio frequency) and the remote you are using is not the same one it is programmed for initially.

If you have the generic remote there should be a slide switch at the top with selections for DirecTv, AV1, AV2 and TV. Make sure that switch is in the TV position.If it really is powering on or off the TV, but not controlling volume and the switch is in the correct position, it may not be programmed properly. Sometimes there is more than one code that will work to turn a device on and off, but ONLY one of those codes will enable all TV functions on the remote. If you changed TV’s, even to another model of the same brand the remote may require a different code than the current one.Be advised that if the batteries went completely dead the remote could have lost it’s programmed setting for your TV. Also if you took too long to change the batteries (you took them out without having new ones on hand) you can lose the programming as well.If it seems like a programming issue then you will need to find the manual that came with the remote and reprogram it yourself. If you cannot find the manual you can go to the DirecTv website and find the instructions there.
Directv remote won't work; box won't shut off.?
Mine is doing the same thing this morning. I just called and there was a message saying to unplug box twice for 30 seconds. ***It came back on, said there was an update, I hit ok on the remote which worked this time and then I got a frozen blue screen. Did the whole process a second time and NOW EVERYTHING WORKS. I guess you have to end up doing the unplug thing 4 times total.
Buttons not working on my Directv remote. HELP!?
If you have a white universal remote and the number on the top right is larger than RC32- do NOT use duracell batteries. Than can cause it. But the basic troubleshooting steps is resetting the remote (by taking batteries out and holding the #1 button down for 10 seconds) then restoring defaults (doing this you will have to reprogram your remote to the tv by going through the menus) to restore the default settings press and hold the mute and select button down until the green light at the top flashes twice- after so enter "9-8-1" (green light should flash four times) then it should work with your equipment. If when you press the buttons and the green light doesn't come on at all after you tried a new set of batteries (aren't duracell) then you'll probably need a new remote due to the buttons aren't being registered on the remote. If you subscribe to the Protection Plan (DirecTV's extended warranty) then call anytime (open 24 hours)- you will have to re troubleshoot with agent on the phone and if unresolved- a new remote would be at no cost- if you do not have the protection plan, then a new remote will be $15.
