Disadvantage Of Short Haul Flights To The Environment

What are the disadvantages of a winglet?

A few days ago I invited a few friends into my hangar at work (charter company) to show them around and let them check out all our planes. They had a lot of questions, most of which I had an answer for. My favorite question was about a winglet on a GIII. I explained what it does, how it works, all that good stuff. Then I got the toughest question of all. "why don't all the other planes have winglets also."

Obviously there is the issue of cost, and the extra weight associated with it, but aside from that I couldn't think of any other reasons.

Why, aside from costs, would a manufacturer choose not to use winglets, wing gates, or raked wing tips?

What are the disadvantages of air travel?

Here's one disadvantage, with regard to short haul flightsWith the amount of time it takes to get to the airport, find parking, take a shuttle from the parking lot to the airport, check-in, go through the line at security, wait for boarding, take the actual flight, land, taxi to the gate, wait for checked baggage, get a rental car, etc., it takes about the same amount of time to fly as it does to drive some fairly common short haul flights.  For example, the San Francisco to Los Angeles drive time is roughly 4.5 to 5 hours.  While the actual flight time between the two cities is about an hour, but add in everything before and after, and you're at about 4.5 to 5 hours as well.  It's almost not worth the hassle to fly, when you can drive there just as quickly.

What environment do you prefer to live in, a cold or hot country? Why?

Extremely Hot or Extremely Cold ?I have lived in cold down to minus 35.4 F. Upward of 54.5C. heat.Canada and Australia. Both temperatures at these extremes need preparation and help to survive. The cold can remove skin from your fingers at minus 35. if you touch metal. You have to learn to change a tyre with gloves on, or loose all your finger prints.Every breath you take hurts. You can't feel your bottom. It's there, you are not able to feel it.Three pair of Sox are needed, thick woolen ones and thick boots. You need goose down or heavily insulated pants and jackets.Balaclava is useful if pure wool under your hood. Now I know what they are used for .The heat, at 55C you can die within an hour and a half without water and shade.A fit perfectly well guy from Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia, went hiking on his own one January summer day.He died only one kilometer from his camspite. The intense heat hit mid afternoon and he was out hiking with only a litre of water. He never made it back to the camp.Where I live now, it is cold but not below -11C in winter to 12 or 14C. Summer is 12 to 45C.Between these extremes, we have 4 seasons, this is the most important thing of all. Spring and Autumn, beautifully calm seasons were the heat of summer fades to the cold of winter. The cold of winter blooms to the glory of spring.Yesterday, Floriade, the largest tulip and flower festival in the southern hemisphere started in Canberra. Many millions of bulbs, hay fever guaranteed for a month. That's why I live here, the wheel of the seasons neither too hot nor too cold.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of tourism?

Home - Gorilla Walkers UgandaMass tourism is a form of tourism that involves tens or thousands of people going to the same Tour country or Area often at the same time of year.ADVANTAGESI.It is often the cheapest way to holiday since a collective contribution is made to cater for the expenses.II.It brings money to the local economy in a way that tourists pay and buy from the locals its much fun when it comes to adventures in Africa were a lot of craftsIII.Creates jobs for local people in form of Guiding, Transportation, AccommodationIV.Young people are more likely to stay in the area when they get to like it in case it’s a country which calls for investment and developmentV.Improved roads, infrastructure, communication which benefits local people, the government looks to improve the structures to boost tourism.VI.Income from tourism can be reinvested in other projects like protecting the environment, Creation of more tour sites and Tourism PromotionDISADVANTAGESVII.Jobs are badly paid and seasonal since it’s very hard to mobilize a given number and most not ready to meet there expensesVIII.Traffic caused by tourists in case they are touring the same area with the locals especially in citiesIX.Behavior of tourists can offend locals like the dress cords or sexual behaviorX.Transporting people places causes global warming since many vehicles are to be used though in the short runXI.Tourism can increase litter and pollution ie sound pollution and food packagesXII.Can lead to the destruction of natural habitats if camping is part of the scheduleXIII.Mass tourism is prone to terrorism especially to most targeted countries

Why are long-haul airplanes generally bigger than short-haul ones?

Tim Hibbetts does a fine job of explaining why big planes aren't pressed into duty on short runs.As for the reasons why smaller planes are seldom used on long-haul routes, I think the key factor here involves the importance of multiple classes of service, with huge differences in seat prices. When you're flying for eight hours or more, people's willingness to trade money for comfort (or vice versa) varies enormously. Most airplanes astutely offer three classes of service on long-haul flights -- with profoundly bigger differences in quality of service and pricing than you would ever find on a two-hour domestic flight. If you want a luxury experience and damn the cost, you can pay $5,000 or more each way for great food and roomy seats that turn into mini-beds. If you're a business traveler with a sympathetic but still financially disciplined travel department, you're in a decent-sized business class seat with good reclining options and a fare of perhaps $2,000 each way. And if you're a student or a budget tourist, you tolerate cramped seating in the back for a $600 fare. The upshot: the airline does a fine job on each flight of capturing top dollar from the passengers who can pay it, while still picking up decent marginal revenue from the thrifty set that fills out the back of the plane.Pulling off extreme multi-tiered services calls for a big plane. Now we're talking about well-separated areas with totally different entertainment, galleys, etc. A 30-row smaller plane wouldn't suffice, especially if you tried to differentiate classes of service with nothing more than a cloth curtain separating first class from business and coach.

What are the advantages of spiroid winglets?

Spiroid winglets save airlines lots of fuel by reducing drag.According to Aviation Partners, “The Spiroid eliminates concentrated wingtip vortices, which represent nearly half the induced drag generated during cruise.” In a short-haul environment, a 10% improvement with Spiroid tipped wings could be the stepping-stone to the next-generation in fuel efficiency. For example, the new Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan has touted a 12-15% improvement in SFC (specific fuel consumption). Pratt & Whitney has always affirmed that the 12-15% improvement is separate from whatever gains in efficiency are delivered through aerodynamic refinement of the aircraft. The coupling of these two technologies could deliver fuel burn improvements up to 22-25%, exceeding even the most optimistic of forecasts without radical changes in engine technology or aircraft configuration that might be required with an unducted fan or blended wing body for example.Boeing has estimated that for every 1% improvement in fuel burn, the 777 would gain 75 nm in range, 10 more passengers or 2,400 pounds of cargo.A doubling in wingtip efficiency with Spiroids could open the door for new routes for airlines. The famed ‘Kangaroo Route’, the non-stop flight between Sydney and London could finally be in reach. The 777-200LR is able to make the journey one-way, but the route has never been economically viable because of the prevailing winds that limit payload capacity. A 4.5% improvement in fuel burn could, once and for all, open up the route.

PROS and CONS of body scanners and pat downs at the airport?

PROS:
-may deter some people from bringing items they should not.
-can pick-up things that an ordinary metal detector cannot.
-creates jobs.

CONS:
-invasion of privacy.
-time-consuming as people have to show up even earlier to the airport.
-not 100% effective. People are still able to get things past the TSA.
