What is hard disk partitioning and what are the pros and cons?

by partitioning your hard drive you get more volumes called drives.

pros: you get to arrange your data in a more practical way, and when it is time for you to re-install windows you wont need to save all your data onto some external drive, you will only format the drive with windows on it

cons: you can lose up to 10% of your total space with partitioning. not a big isue these days since 1Tb hdd goes for 40£

What are the advantages of disk partitioning?

Disk partitioning may do a big favor to you.The hard drive should be one partition at the very first. If you only have one partition which stored bothe system files and other data, your Windows may load slow because of large data, or you may get into a big trouble: when your system failed, you will lose all data on the partition. Thus, disk partitioning will help you get out of this trouble. You can separate the system partition and data partition so that once your system failed and you need to restore it or reinstall Windows, your data stored on the other partitions won’t be deleted. Besides, store different data on different partitions can help users organize data easier. In a word, disk partitioning means a lot for users. And that’s why you need to partition hard drive in Windows 10/8/7.

What is a drive partition?

In truth it’s just some table in the very start of the drive. This table just lists the starting position and ending position of the usable space. It’s possible to have more than one such entry in this table, and it’s possible that any one such entry only uses a portion of the drive (even leaving a part “unused”). Each one of these entries (and the spaces they refer to) are called partitions, there’s a minimum of one necessary else the drive isn’t usable (not in a normal way). From this the operating system determines “logical” drives. Onto these a file system can be placed through a format command. After that you actually have a drive which is in fact usable - e.g. shows up as a C: or D: (or whatever) drive in Windows or as a mounted folder in Linux / OSX (or other unix-like operating systems), and allows reading and writing files / folders onto it.You sometimes (in fact usually) find that a manufacturer did this partitioning (and sometimes even formatting) for you. In which case you just plug the drive into the computer and it works. Otherwise you have to do this manually through such tools as Windows Drive Manager / GParted / Gnome Disks / etc. before you can even format it, never mind use it.

What are the advantages & disadvantages of partitioning your hard disk?

Advantages: Better Organization, may use less disk space

Disadvantage: More drives to monitor.

I've always been big on partitioning the hard drive. I leave the C: drive for Windows, Install programs on D:, Use E: to store data, store media (graphics, videos) on F:...etc

Added: biff... it's not a good thing to say things you don't know anything about.

Large hard drives partitioned only once tend to use more disk space to nest files further into subdirectories. Of course, I'll grant that depends on the individual user, but I did say "may" didn't I?

Things like fat tables will use up the same disk space wether it be one large FAT on one drive or two smaller FATs on two drives.

It all comes down to this... Any advantages or disadvantages will be small. It's really a matter of personal preference.

The only major disadvantage I can think of would be a single large drive is much more likely to get fragmented files... that will slow down the system.
