Semitic Languages: How different are Arabic and Hebrew?

Most the answers covered it but here is my very short addition:Arabic is about as similar to Hebrew as English is to Yiddish. Arabic is not written in the same script as Hebrew nor is English written in the same script as Yiddish, however Arabic is in the same language family as Hebrew (Semitic) as English is with Yiddish (Germanic).Being in the same language family means having many essential structures being similar. For Semitic languages this is most notably the triliteral root system, presence of an Ayin guttural letter, writing from right-to-left, and not writing short vowels.Nonetheless, just as English and Yiddish are not mutually intelligible, nor are Arabic and Hebrew. Their histories are extremely divergent just as English and Yiddish are. Sure, knowing one makes learning the other slightly easier just as knowing English would make learning Yiddish easier than someone who does not speak a Germanic language. At the end of the day, each language deserves its own effort.

I want to learn Arabic online. Where should I find a course on the web?

Natakallam is a great program to learn Arabic online. Students are paired with Syrian refugees living in Lebanon. The unique benefits of this particular online program are..You'll learn Arabic through conversation in real time with a real person (hopefully the days of repeating phrases to a recorded video in order to learn a language are over). You will learn the Levantine dialect of Arabic. This spoken dialect of Arabic  is understood by the vast majority of Arabic speakers worldwide and is the closest dialect to classical Arabic/Modern Standard Arabic (in regards to vocabulary usage)--this is beneficial because when (or if) you decide to study classical Arabic/MSA, your learning curb won't be so steep. The program cost is extremely affordable. You'll be able to engage in meaningful cultural exchange while you learn the language. Here is the link to the program, NaTakallam.

Is my interdisciplinary studies degree going to be useless?

I am 28 years old, work full time and am currently going to a respected state school's bachelor of interdisciplinary studies distance learning program. I chose to transfer to this program from my community college after getting an AA because it allowed me to take classes at night while working full time without me having to quit my job and figure out a new schedule. I have always been interested in International affairs, and hope to use this degree as a gateway to a graduate program in this field. I had misgivings about the path I took when I first started, but I am overall happy with the quality of the education I am getting and the professors. Most other people have similar concerns, but people tend to argue you can just leverage the name of the school and say you have a degree from such a prestigious school in order to help you get jobs or get into decent grad schools. I take mostly classes related to politics and sociology as I figure this would be as close as possible to a "traditional" political science degree I had originally hoped to attain. I get good grades as well having over a 3.5 gpa. Will I be okay?

Where can i learn korean in egypt?

I looked for quite a long time for any Korean lessons in Egypt, and there may be some at the Universities, but these are only offered to students of the university. The best option might be to do a distance learning, correspondence, online course, or a self learning course. There are many options in terms of this.

Yonsei Korean University offers a distance learning program that you can do online from anywhere in the world and you have access to all the facilities necessary for learning the language: http://cylang.com/yonsei/production.htm

There are also courses like Rosetta Stone: http://www.rosettastone.com/learn-korean ; Pimsleur Korean: http://www.pimsleurkorean.com/

You have to pay for all these courses, but there are free courses available such as:

http://www.livemocha.com/learn-korean

http://korean.sogang.ac.kr/

http://www.learnkorean.com/home/index.asp

This is also a very useful site for resources for learning Korean, understanding Hangul, and links to other sites with more info about learning korean: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/korean.htm

Another option is to buy grammar books, dictionaries and phrase books, and self study. There are many of these on amazon such as:

Berlitz Korean Dictionary: Korean-English / English-Korean
Basic Korean: A Grammar and Workbook by Andrew Sangpil Byon (there is an intermediate and advanced edition as well)
Korean: Lonely Planet Phrasebook by Minkyoung Kim, J. D. Hilts, and Lonely Planet Phrasebooks

Try using sites like YouTube to listen to Korean language, and there is a good site called Interpals where you can talk to native speakers and practice. ( http://www.interpals.net/ )

There may be other local classes in your area. The best thing to do to find those is to check your local paper, or look for a local tutor. But hopefully all this will help you to learn. Good luck.
