What animal is believed to be safe but is actually quite dangerous?

People think some animals are gentle for the same reason we think babies are cute. Big eyes and round face shapes make our brains light up with friendliness. Can't help it - it's pretty fundamental to our species' survival since we require significant coorperative caretaking for years after birth. Anything that looks like a baby will induce our caretaking urges.A couple point about how we perceive good and bad:1) Don't fuss about how *you* don't like kids and other people do. I mean a much deeper, unconscious, uncontrollable urge is at work here. Even a simple face shape like this:causes neurons in the Fusiform Face Area (FFA) of the brain to fire. This is your brain saying "FACE! I see a FACE! It might have information. Do I know this person? What is the mood of this person? Are they friendly or dangerous?"But when you see a face like this:or this:Your brain loses its marbles with excitement. Here's a round face with gigantic eyes and blunt features all in the right place to indicate that you are looking at a BABY. The least dangerous, most needy face of all.But your brain is not very discriminating. So when you see this:or this:well, what's a brain to do? Clearly these big-eyed, round-faced, blunt featured creatures must also be BABIES and therefore they warrant all the trust and adoration that we need to heap upon babies for them to survive years of utter helplessness and resource draining.Truth be told, they do not get ALL the adoration of a baby. When you see an actual human baby, several parts of the brain light up - the Fusiform Face Area is one, but also emotional centers, bonding areas (these are the technical terms :-P). When a human sees a cute animal the FFA lights up, but not as strongly as for an actual baby. The emotional centers respond if the image you see is your own dog, but not just any animal.Still, it's enough to cause a person to look at an unknown creature and say "Aww - cute!" without thinking about *why* that animal has big front-facing eyes (nocturnal? predator? could be anything), or *why* that animal has blunt features or a round face (does it dig tunnels? does it rely on sight more than smell?). The features that cause the CUTE! response are mostly uncorrelated with the dangerousness of the animal (except insofar as many baby animals themselves has bigger eyes and blunter features than adults of the same species).

Are cats more dangerous than dogs if they attack you?

Yes they can be. Dog attacks could potentially do a lot of tissue damage. There could be multiple wounds or the dog could knock you down so you could hit your head and the dog could continue to deliver bites that are big, graphic and painful. But they are visible and and can be treated with cleaning, debriding, sutures, wound care and antiobiotics. Pretty straight forward.Cat bites can actually be more dangerous, however, because a cat’s fangs dramatically curve inward and when they bite, the bite goes deep. They don’t do as much damage, or so it appears. The wound heals quickly on the skin’s surface making you think you are fine. But since the bite curves, it does not have a straight line to drain the wound. So on the surface it looks fine, but underneath a deadly abscess can be forming and by the time you realize there is heat, redness and tenderness, you will need to be hospitalized and given IV antibiotics. But many times, people die from this scenario. Also, cat scratches can deliver another potentially fatal infection, cat scratch fever. You can turn your back on a dog or kick it away in self-defense, but cats can sink their teeth and claws into you and hang on for dear life and can move with lightening speed. So in my opinion, I think a cat would be more dangerous.

Can you kill a dog if it attacks you?

Yes, you can kill a dog who attacks you- if you feel your life is in jeopardy, defend yourself and worry about the law later…. most jurisdictions allow self defense. See all the posts about fighting off a police dog for that specific issue. But, can you actually kill the dog?Not without weapons, training and help. Unless it was a mop dog or lap dog, of course, but anything over say 10–12 kg (maybe less) and you are in trouble. Thats how much a staffordshire bull terrier weighs, and although I love staffies, I’ve seen one take a face full of pepper spray and keep attacking, and he was not going to stop unless he was prevented from attacking by some brave soul, who happened to be the SPCA officer with a neck loop. The SPCA guy nearly garrotted that dog before he would stop biting.Dogs attack for various reasons- because they are insanely aggressive, territorial, food-/resource guarding, or feel their breeding rights/pups are threatened. When they attack, unless they have been trained to attack “properly” like a Police dog, they go for the kill, because they assume you will. Unless you know what to do, they will get you before you get them. Most have a bite force strong enough to break bones and tear flesh. They will fight until subdued but you will stop when you are hurt. Other dogs may join in if present. If the dog has been trained to attack people, you’re in serious trouble.Best thing to do is learn to read dog calming signals and tell if a dog is aggressive- and if they are, calmly and quickly go the other way.http://en.turid-rugaas.no/calmin...
