How much money do i get if i recycle water bottles and soda cans?

It's definitely worth it to save them up and take them into the recycling center. They don't pay me per can, but by weight. After about a year of piling bags of cans in the garage I took them in and got 80 something dollars.

How much can you get for recycling cans in Missouri?

I don't know about MO, but I tried it myself where I live. Let me tell you, if you are merely trying to sell the cans for the scrap value of the aluminum, you are in for a bigtime dissapointment. I totally filled the back of my fullsize pickup truck and took it to the recycling center. I think the total load weighed about 40 pounds...and I got 35 cent per pound. The result was a whopping $14. This was after saving and collecting aluminum cans for a full 2 months.

Why don't people recycle in the U.S.? How can I start recycling initiatives at home/community?

Recycling services are available in the majority of the US. Where I live, we have  Single-stream recycling, which is simple and practically effortless. Every resident is given large toter bins.  All recyclables, paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, even old CDs, DVDs and VCR tapes go into the toter and are collected at our curb once a week.  Many towns do not have this service.  In these places, there is a collection center, or town dump.  You have to provide your own bags or toter, and bring it to the dump for recycling yourself. It is not difficult once it becomes a habit.Apartment buildings usually have a designated dumpster or bin for recyclables, located where you take your trash. If your apartment building does not recycle, call your city or town hall and see what the procedure is where you live.If your apartment pays to have its trash collected, they may actually be able to save money by recycling.  In some places, the money made from selling the recyclables is credited against the buildings trash fees. Good for you for making the effort to recycle.

Which recycling centers in NYC pay for paper scrap?

This is actually an interesting question - I haven't heard of paper salvage where the waste producer is paid instead of the salvage yard so I looked up a few things. My best understanding after a bit of research on New York salvage practices (which are not necessarily unusual by any means - most recycling centers and waste handlers appear to offer a standard set of services) is that an activity such as paper salvage would not be like a scrap metal yard for cars or collecting aluminum cans. At a place like a pick & pull, where you can sell your old vehicle to them, if you are lucky or a good negotiator, they may pay you a little bit of the value for some of the potentially usable parts because they expect to recoup some of it by selling the parts to someone else at a higher price. Similarly, it is far cheaper for aluminum to be reprocessed than to be extracted from the ground and smelted. However, because paper could be wet or moist, and would likely be valued or measured by weight (not volume), it would be even less likely that the salvage yard would pay you for it. Instead, it is more likely you will pay the handler for the privilege of not having the unwanted item(s) anymore. That said I suppose if you have an enormous amount of paper to get off your hands, you might be able to sell it to another party that is interested in a particular new end use, or trade it for something of equal value if you are savvy enough. It would also probably depend on the condition of the paper, type of paper (e.g. toilet paper??)  and the amount of ink or other substances on the paper. You might try calling a newspaper or magazine company with a printing press and asking if they have any ideas. Otherwise, your local public works department probably has a good set of resources available about local materials recovery practices. Good luck!

When you take plastic bottles to a recycling center in California, are you being refunded for the same amount you paid when you bought it?

No, When you take plastic bottles to a recycling center in California, We will get only 5 cent of money back But this way we can protect our environment from Plastic Bottles. In most cases you don't have to go far out of your way to recycle. Where can I make money recycling 2-liter bottles?

You have to check what it says on the bottle. Plus it would depend on where you live.

For example, in US it may say CRV which means 'California redemption value'. It also says how much money you can get if you recycle it; typically it is 5c per bottle.

You can recycle and get the money at a local recycling station; again it depends on where you live and what it says in the bottle.

Do you have to pay income tax on money made from recycling scrap metal?

If you're recycling soda cans that you bought, you have a rock-solid argument that you aren't making income because you are recovering the money you paid for the cans. It's the same principle that when you loan someone $100, only the interest you get is income; the original $100 you get back is recovering your cost.

If your neighbors give you cans to recycle then it's a gift, which is not taxable income, though gift taxes would come into play if someone gives you several tons.

If you pick up cans off the street or make a business arrangement to haul off someone's recyclables and make a profit after hauling, then it's taxable income. The IRS will never admit that any income is too small to not count, but for practical purposes they aren't going to go after $10 of income. The minimum amount is going to vary a lot depending on the situation. If you round off amounts to whole dollars on your return then you can count 49 or 50 cents as zero dollars, depending on your rounding rules.

If your profit, after relavent expenses, is $400 or more then you are legally required to claim it as self-employment income and pay harsh self-employment taxes, in addition to regular income taxes. Whether or not you get a 1099 from the buyer doesn't matter--that's between the buyer and the IRS. From a legal point of view, it also doesn't matter that billions of dollars of this sort of income aren't reported.
