Do Any Democrats Here Really Believe That Blacks Alive Today Deserve Reparations

Do you think blacks should get reparations for slavery and post slavery discrimination based on Marianne Williamson's plan?

No.Not a single African American alive today was a slave. Not a single Caucasian alive today was a slave owner. I do not see why people should pay for something their ancestors/people of the same race have done in the past. We are individuals, not herds. How are the reparations going to be paid? Will African Americans who lived during the Jim Crow laws get paid more? Will mixed-race citizens get paid less, or would they have to pay? Would Caucasians whose ancestors arrived in the US after slavery have to pay? How much does each African-American deserve? Do African Americans whose ancestors arrived in the US after slavery get paid? Would African Americans whose ancestors owned slaves (yes, that happened) have to pay?The answer is no. Reparations are racist, not effective, too expensive, and promote collective punishment.

Will reparations be a loser in the 2020 general election for Democrats?

“Anything you get for free is the most expensive thing you can receive….for it will cost you in ways much beyond.”You can re-package reparations in some moral gift box all you want but a stigma will be attached to it that will live on. If you want to be perceived as an equal then you can’t take a handicap. Be it sports, education, employment or a financial benefit exclusive to you that you yourself did not earn. The moment I spot you points on the basketball court, we are not equal and you are accepting that. The respect will come when someone has the nuts to say “you can take your hand out and your leg up then shove it up your *ss”…until that day comes…you won’t get your level playing field. Worse yet, you are doing that to yourself and then blaming society for your roll in creating the inequality you cry foul for.Good luck out there!

Why do black Americans want reparations for slavery?

I really haven't heard much of that nonsense, except from the truly racist Jackson's and Sharpton's and Farakan's of the country. Most of the blacks that I know personally are good hard working people that are not interested in that but rather getting what they have on their own.

Do African-Americans believe the U.S. should pay them monetary reparations for slavery?

This is a contentious topic but one that Black people generally feel strongly about...The simple answer is, yes, some Black people, myself included, do in fact belive that we should receive reparations (although there is no definitive agreement on what kind) from the U.S.Moreover, a recent United Nations report released in August of last year (a report that was not nationally reported on by mainstream media for some reason) actually recommend that the United States pay African Americans reparations for the systematic racial and economic oppression perpetrated against us for generations by White America.I believe that most of the general public really don't understand what America has put Black people through. Moreover, the public tends to ignore the fact that the Unted States government is no stranger to paying out millions of dollars in reparations (in some form) already. One personal example, I had a classmate who was a 25% Native American and she payed no tuition. A graduate degree that normally costs between $40,000-$60,000, she pays nothing for on account of her Native American status. This could, and should, be the case with African Americans.I hope that answers your question :)

Why do people in the U.S specifically rail against reparations for Black people but show nowhere near the same disdain for other minority groups?

Because the reparations would be for slavery, and no slave from that era is alive anymore. Most people have a problem giving “apology money” to people for a grievance they never suffered from.“What about Jim Crow, lynchings, and segregation?” you ask. Once again, those things happened so long ago that most of the people who DO remember it are either dead or in too old an age to truly benefit. Also, reparations would require only certain groups to pay. This is problematic because most groups deemed responsible either are from groups who never had ancestors own slaves, whose ancestors came here after the Civil War, or who were biracial. The sheer complexity of figuring out who pays and who doesn’t is mindboggling. Plus the Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on race, which is a two edged sword. If it’s to affect any American, it must affect all. Then there is the inconvenient truth that those who do pay actually are paying for something they never did and would never do.Frankly, I don’t feel responsible for what great-great-great-grandpa did. He’s responsible for his own sake. Too much time has passed, and the statute of limitations has run out.The other groups got their reparations within that generation.Factor in welfare and affirmative action, a type of reparations have been made and are continuing to be made.Too many economic downturns have happened in the last 150+ years to say that whites have benefited to this day. Any advantages and benefits pretty much evaporated with the Great Depression.People who never contributed to a problem feel no responsibility to pay reparations to people who never suffered what the reparations are for.In order for things to get better, people must focus on making the future better rather than holding onto anchors of the past.
