Do Baseball Players In A Public Highschool Get More Notice Than Ones At A Small Private School

Are hockey players really douches?

I grew up in a hockey town, I've been pretty involved with senior level hockey in Southern Alberta (not playing, but just from an administrative side) and I know a few NHL players (all have come from Southern Alberta).

In my experience it's the younger ones that usually display douche bag tendencies. When they're young and praised as being an "eltie player" alot of them take it to their heads and start treating the world like everyone owes them. I also notice the hazing is more extreme for the young ones, and they tend to stick together being douche bags to everyone else. For them it's like a "club" where they belong... kind of like a gang.

The older ones that have gone places with hockey usually tone it down becuase they start to realize the true competitive nature of the sport and they mature as well. Usually they have cooler heads by the time they're in their mid-20's (if you're in you're mid-20's and playing hockey for a living you've usually made it somewhere).

All of the NHLers I know (KNOW, not met) are pretty decent guys with the exception of one guy. But the last time I talked to him was a couple years ago and he just started making pretty good money and you can tell he was kind of showing off to his home town... just kind of looking down on people, thinking he was "holier than thou". I am assuming he's cooled off since he was only 22 when I was last saw him. All the other ones I know are just like you and I except they are really good at hockey and are rich. Most of them I know usually like to keep a lower profile when they're having a night on the town and are pretty reasonable, personable people.

Can homeschool kids make it to the NBA, NFL or any professional sports? How?

The only ones that I know have made the NBA or NFL are Tim Tiebow and Jason Taylor. I understand they were allowed to play on their high school football teams as homeschooled students. Without that access, they probably would not have developed the skill to play college football, though who knows. All states don't allow homeschooled students to be on school teams. There are homeschool basketball and football leagues. An outstanding individual player on one of those teams would attract the attention of recruiters. There will always be recruiters looking at say De La Salle High (the national high school champion) because they know it has a very strong football team every year. The track star mentioned in the link Ozboz48 gives was homeschooled until 8th grade, so he presumably was on a high school team and was recruited that way.

Homeschooling could definitely be a better choice for someone who wanted to be a professional ice skater, tennis player, gymnast, racer car driver, rodeo, or other individual sport, rather than team sport, because it allows more time to train. Team or individual, most people who train to that level, set that as their goal early on.

My soccer coach refuses to play me, what should I do?

I recommend you sort out some of your feelings on this matter, as to me some of your concerns are legitimate and others less so.

I think you have a legitimate problem regarding your relationship with your coach. It doesn't seem like very much of a rotation if you have not played in 3 games, so he doesn't seem to being straight forward with you in that regard.

Conversely, you seem to be focusing quite a bit on how the others play. That is not good, as you need to be working on your own game. Some of your comments even seem to border on jealousy, which you need to be careful to avoid.

I would recommend that you have a conversation with the coach in private. Be sure not to be dramatic or threatening, and ask him what you need to do to get playing time. He might point out flaws in your game or attitude you can work on.

Hopefully he will not bring up the rotation item, as its rather clear that isn't the real reason. If he says that and you continue not to play, you might want to consider other options.

On a side note, I tend to doubt discrimination is the root of the problem. What I have seen with private schools before, however, is recruiting promises. Unlike public schools, private schools can recruit athletes. Perhaps a promise was made to the freshmen that they would get playing time if they attended your school. There is no way to tell if that is truly the case, but I have seen that before.

Is a smaller school less cliquey than a big school?

I go to a bigger school now and I am going to see a smaller school tomorrow, are they perhaps at all less cliquey and more friendly and welcoming? It really depends on the school... Anyone heard of Regent Christian Academy? Any good reviews of it??.. not much information on the web... thanks for your comments

Does anyone know about this Sports Illustrated story?

The one about global warming and how it will effect Florida and Californian sports. The magazine has Dontrelle Willis on the cover. I need the article for a school project.

What do colleges think of you playing a club sport rather than for your high school?

Depends on the quality of the club and competition. In some sports kids do not even have the option of playing the sport in their high school. Until recently no Arkansas high school offered wrestling or bowling. Not many offer soccer. Very few offer golf or tennis. I don't believe any offer swimming and diving or gymnastics. Several don't offer baseball or softball so local players play American Legion baseball or play for traveling softball teams. None offer ice hockey. So coaches are used to going where the players are.Now if you play volleyball or basketball. Those are commonly offered but each has fairly strong AAU club systems so a player excelling at the club level probably still gets noticed. But if you are talking about a local recreational league where kids going to one large local high school are split up playing for 8 or 10 or 20 local rec league teams? Coaches will never see you.

What are the best schools in Albuquerque?

I attended Albuquerque Academy. I rarely talk about my high school years, except with friends from high school, because I really can’t do it without rubbing how lucky I was in people’s faces. For starters, the core academics are spectacular. The vast majority of teachers are great. A substantial percentage had terminal degrees (either Ph.D.s or MFAs). Almost everyone takes multiple AP classes, and does very well: 4s or 5s on the exam are the norm, and 2s are very, very rare. There are enough class offerings to let you dive deep into subject you want; the math track extends the equivalent of two full years beyond what most high schools offer, while I was able to take a total of 8 unique, year-long, fine arts classes. The campus is spectacular. It looks like an elite liberal arts college. Thousands of bunnies frolic between the buildings, and you’ll occasionally see a coyote or owl. The facilities allowed me to take kayaking as my P.E. credit.More importantly, I never saw the elitism or snobbishness you’d expect at a top private school. Thanks to generous financial aid and active recruiting efforts, there was a respectable amount of racial and economic diversity on campus, and I never noticed a social divide between the people receiving financial aid and the people who didn’t. I never saw bullying (and my friends and I were very much the type you’d expect to get bullied). Our year had a star baseball player, who would go on to play in the major leagues, and while that was considered cool, it wasn’t considered more exciting than the person who place first nation-wide in policy debate. There was a genuine respect for intelligence, and, in an environment where strict admissions testing meant everyone was at least reasonably intelligent, that meant everyone was respected.
