Do Canvas Bag Straps Cut Easily

I have a heavy punching bag, but its straps are broken. How can I still use it?

There is a similar question here:How can we change the holding grip of a kick-bag in order to overcome the tearing of the holes which are provided at the top of the bag for hanging? If the D-rings have worn through the top of the straps then you need new heavy leather riveted in to the tops of the straps. My gym at Croydon burned through a ton of gear over the decades and we could not have survived without the professional leather work of an old-style shoe craftsman. He did a lot of repairs for us, without which we’d probably have gone bust due to the cost of buying new gear all the time. Gloves, punchbags, hand pads, armpads, leather ropes and a lot more always need repair in a proper gym that gives them hard use.Find an old-school shoemaker / repairer* and ask their advice.* I believe in their trade they call a skilled man a snob, and a bodger and lash-up merchant a cobbler (and why we call something sub-standard ‘cobbled up’) ; but I avoided that dilemma by just using ‘repair specialist’ or whatever :)

How to clean my Vans?

First clean the excess dirt off of them:

Knock off any loose dirt by smacking the sneakers on pavement or tapping the soles together over a waste basket or newspaper, then wipe them with a damp cloth to remove any remaining caked-on dirt. Remove laces.

Second:

Rinse shoes with warm water inside and out. Scrub the canvas sneakers' outsides, insides and liners gently with toothbrush and mixture of water and mild detergent. Rinse with clean cool water.

If scuff marks remain, scrub gently with nylon pad. Rinse again. If the liners still retain foot odor, scrub them with a paste of baking soda and water. Wash laces in with a load of like-colored laundry.

When cleaning colored canvas sneakers, be sure to use a non-bleaching soap, and do a small spot test with your cleaning mixture to be sure it doesn’t fade or leach out color.

Sneakers with mesh inserts can be cleaned the same way as plain canvas shoes.

If your sneakers have leather detailing, dampen and clean the canvas as directed and use leather cleaner on any leather parts.

Third:

Stuff canvas sneakers with crumpled brown paper bags, paper towels or white office paper (not newspaper or colored paper, the ink transfers).

Let them air-dry along with the laces.

Do not dry them near a fireplace or heater. Direct heat breaks down canvas fabric and causes shoes to become dried out and brittle.

Manufacturers may suggest spraying the tops of new canvas sneakers with a cloth care spray before you wear them. Your best bet is to follow any care instructions included with your sneakers.

I hope this helped. Good luck! I know that ths can be a pain. I had the same thing happened to me, and these methods worked for me.

Is it possible to still buy "duffle bags"?

In the early 1990's I had a duffle bag which I took everywhere with me and I really want one for my neice, it was blue/green with eyes sort of cut out of the main bag, showing the "eyeballs" on the underlayer, it also had white hands sticking out the sides and black and white stripey feet on the bottom that had white plastic trainers with blue painted on detail, he bag itself was rectangle with a little hand strap, much like a shopping bag. I'm dying to find another one or something similar but mine went to the charity shop years ago! I've been searching google and ebay for hours and I can't find any trace of them, let alone a retailer in England

Put straps between right sides of fabric on each side about two to three inches in the side border.7. Pins straps and the top edge of bag well. Stitch around the very top of the bag 1/2 inches from the edge. Leave a 2-3 inch opening for turning bag (I usually leave this on the side).8. Turn bag inside out.9. Strong fabric for backpack?

YOu can use cotton duck fabric or canvas. Just hot water wash and dry the material BEFORE cutting it out to preshrink it. The problem with them is that the seams tend to unravel. If you use those fabrics you need to bind or double stitch the seams.

The best fabrics for packs are nylon packcloth or cordura (which is nylon canvas) or ballistic cloth (the strong nylon fabric used for military bags). You will have a hard time finding them in most fabric stores. If you have a backpacking gear store in your area they might sell some fabrics. However, there is a great online fabric and sewing supply company called Seattle Fabrics that has all kinds of these fabrics that you can order. They also sell patterns for backpacks and all the "notions" like webbing for straps, nylon plastic buckles and zippers. Great company, nice online catalog and easy to order.

You should be able to get everything you need for under $40 from them.

As far as sewing machines, any decent portable should be able to handle sewing these fabrics. I have sewn all kinds of packs and outdoors gear for over 40 years using an antique treadle sewing machine! You can usually buy good used machines via Craigslist. Also ask at fabric stores like Joannes -- often they can sell you reconditioned machines or recommend places where you can get them. In my city you can always find used sewing machines in good working order for around $30 to $60. Singer, Necchi and Kenmore are good reliable brands.

For the thread to sew the pack, get the stronger "upholstery" thread and make sure you get heavy enough needles for the machine to handle the thread. If you do use nylon fabrics, after you cut out the shapes, get a candle and run each edge of the fabric close to the flame -- you will see it start to melt and seal the raw edges so the threads can't unravel. This is one of the big benefits of using nylon.

ONe other answer suggested ripstop nylon but I have found that is usually not strong enough for a bag carrying books. It is also not very water proof. Coated packcloth or cordura will have waterproofing on one side if you want to have your bag be rain resistant (the zippers and seams will leak in heavy rain, of course).
