Do Cell Phones And Computers Really Cause Brain Cancer Help Im Only 15

Do cell phones cause cancer?

The claim: Radiation emitted from your cell phone could travel through your skull and into your brain, creating tumors.

The reality: Cell phones actually expose you to non-iodizing radiofrequency (RF), which means it doesn’t have enough energy to damage your DNA and form a pre-cancerous cell. So far, no evidence exists that radiofrequency exposure causes tumors, even in animals, says Melissa Bondy, Ph.D., professor of epidemiology at MD Anderson and director of the Childhood Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Center.

Still, Bondy says, we should be more cautious with our cell phones. That’s especially true for kids, whose developing brains could be most vulnerable to radiofrequency exposure.

It could take decades for us to see stronger evidence on the relationship between tumors and cell phone use because widespread use of cell phones didn’t begin until the mid-1990s.

“We don’t know if cell phones could cause tumors,” Bondy says. “More research needs to be done.”

The advice: To be safe, try these simple tips:

* Purchase a cell phone with a low absorption rate. You can find cell phones’ absorption rates on the Federal Communications Commission’s website.
* Limit the conversations you have with your cell phone to your ear.
* Limit children’s cell phone use.
* Use a landline when possible.
* Use a headset.
* Use a speaker phone.
* Send text messages (except while driving!).

Why do phones cause cancer?

Yes, cell phones do emit microwaves. That's how they send your voice and your data to the cell tower. Your microwave oven also emits microwaves, but most of them are contained inside the microwave, and they are high enough power to heat things that are inside the microwave oven. It is well established that if your phone used the same power as your microwave oven, you would get burns and you would significantly increase your chance of getting cancer.

Cell phones use a lower power signal, so they don't heat your head a noticeable amount. But is it harmless? Nobody knows for sure. There are some studies that show increased risk of cancer among heavy cell phone users, but it's hard to get really good data because we can't take two groups and expose half of them to microwaves for 20 years to see if the groups end up having different rates of cancer. Heavy cell phone users tend to be different from light cell phone users in ways other than their cell phone use (they tend to have high stress jobs and tend to be less careful about their health), so just comparing those two groups doesn't tell us much.

There are no "cellphone related cancers". There are people who get brain tumors on the side of the head that they normally hold their cell phones. So they call them "cellphone related cancers". And if you introduce them to someone who is a light cell phone user who get a brain tumor on the side that they don't normally hold the phone on, these get dismissed as "non-cellphone related cancers". If the risk of getting a brain tumor is not increased by cell phone use, you still would expect that by random chance, half of them would get the tumor on the same side that they hold the phone on. Actually, some people will incorrectly remember how they usually held their phone once they found out they had a tumor on one side, so you'll get more than 50% (this is called recall bias, and if you tell me I have a tumor on my left side, I'm more likely to remember holding my phone on the left side and forget the times I held it on the right side). If cell phones do increase your risk of getting brain tumors, there's no way to say that any particular tumor was or wasn't caused by cell phones.

Can computers cause cancer?

The EM radiation from cell phones and electronics are non-ionizing radiation, thus the chance of cancer is really really low. You need something like energetic UV and X-Rays or particulate radiation to ionize the DNA, which could cause a mutation that might result in cancer.

Flat screen TVs are much safer than older TVS.

Older TVs had a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), CRTs emit electrons (ionizing radiation) to produce a image on a phosphor screen. The the glass screen that you typically see on such a TV is pretty thick and contains some lead--reason why CRTS are so heavy--to stop the electrons from the CRT and the X-rays they produces. However, while the lead stops most the X-rays, some still X-Rays get out, but very little.

LCDs have many groups of color crystals where voltage is applied to vary a shade and is back like my florescence or LED lights--if I remember correctly.

So, if you want to get really technical, then new TVs and flat-screens are safer for us.

Again cell phones do not emit non-ionizing radiation, so the cause of cancer is really really low even if it is possible. Only thing non-ionizing radiation can do is burn you if it is intense enough and cell phones and TVs are not. Depending on the frequency determines where it will burn you. We use microwaves for heating as microwaves vibrate water and fat molecules almost at the same time... cooking throughout.

I get headaches while using a cell phone?

No, nearly all scientists, and I as well, believe that cell phones do NOT cause cancer. The reason is because cell phones do not have enough energy to damage your DNA. They are a form of non-ionizing radiation.

At the end of the day, things happen in life, such that we can't always control life. Accidents happen, and that's just how life is. Oh yes, and the feeling that you're feeling is like a placebo. If I were to tell you that the hamburger you ate at McDonald's was actually rat meat, you'd probably start feeling sick, even though, it was just based on your own thoughts. You see how you can trick your mind into feeling icky about somethign? That's exactly how it is. The funny thing is, that non-ionized radiation CAN be felt by us, through heat and warmthness (light, cell phones, computer monitors). Ionizing radiation like X-rays, and CT Scans CANNOT be felt at all. You should be more concerned of the things you can't feel!

You shouldn't be a hypochondriac (believing you're sick when you're not), because then you will grow up and be one of those adults that gets exposed to a lot of treatment, when you don't really need it. It'll do you more harm than good.

Learn to accept life. The people who live to be 90 didn't do anything special to reach that age. Perhaps you need to re-evaluate how you view life. You know, I know you're concerned about life and it's all a mystery, but remember that you could die at any moment and everyone will leave this earth. Sometimes unexpected thing happen and you can't control it, so don't worry about it, so just learn to live life and make the best of it.

Do i have colon cancer?? im only 15?

OK, calm down and listen to old Aunt Kelly. First, you are extremely young to have colon cancer. I was 46, and I was considered very young (they don't usually even start colonoscopies to screen for it until age 50). Polyps like your mom had are not necessarily cancerous--in fact they usually aren't. They can be removed during the colonoscopy and tested to be sure. Even if what you had was similar to colon cancer, there are many other diseases that have similar symptoms, like irritable bowel syndrome. First try eating more fiber, and start taking a stool softener. If that doesn't help, then see your doctor to see what else he can recommend.

I wasn't having just constipation when I was diagnosed with colon cancer, and I never had any of the other symptoms you've described (could they be side effects from any medicine?). For several months I alternated between constipation and diarrhea, and some people also have very small, almost pencil-shaped stools. By the time it got to stage 3, when I was finally diagnosed, I was having intense pain, alternating between feeling like the worst gas you can imagine and blinding pain that bent me over (and don't trust doctors that tell you at that stage that you're just constipated, like I did).

Your mom may be right about the hemorrhoid--they aren't always right on the surface, and the brighter the blood, the further down it is on the colon, so it's close to the end. Also, by your having such bad constipation, it's also more likely.

Colon cancer is not as terrible as some believe. I was lucky--they did surgery as soon as they found it, and my oncologist told me that even without chemo, at stage 3 60% of all patients are cured. With chemo your odds increase to about 75%. At stage 1 it's well over 90%, and at stage 2 it's over 80% even without chemo.
