Most hotels in india(that are not very cheap) allow if the guy and girl look decent .It is on a case by case basis though . if they doubt that their stay might be for doing "mischief" then they ask question . then in that case you take separate rooms .If they(guy and girl) don't have any luggage they might have doubt. basically body language plays a role. Few years back I went to a resort in kerala with my wife. We expected that they may ask id proof photo etc. we had marriage certificate ,marriage photo etc . they never asked anything. it was not a very expensive resort.in the same resort a guy and girl stayed . they did check in at same time. they were college students. not even 20 y . the admin did not ask any question . this resort is listed in makemytrip as number one (based on rating)in its category in its locality in kerala .long back I stayed in a hotel in bangalore for interview purpose. cheap one. police knocked my door at midnight. they checked under the cot and in restroom. it seems its customary for police to come to raid in cheap hotels.I read somewhere that if we book online in advance(by paying full amount or token) then our identity can be traced in case of any trouble. then there is no problem for them to allow us. booking online in advance implicitly conveys that we leave trace of our stay.

To answer your question, I will have to break it down into 2 smaller issues:Do hotels “spy” on guests in their bedroom? Officially - legally - absolutely NO. We don't talk about small, private-owned motel, hostel or guesthouse where the owners or staffs can do whatever they please illegally.How do they (the hotels) know about “the stranger” in your room? I used to work as Asst Front Office Manager at a Sheraton hotel. There are 2 types of surveillance in order to ensure our guests safety by keep “the stranger” out. First, we have the receptionists. We pay attention to the lobby and the elevators entrance 24/7, that's our duty. We remember most of the “girl-strangers” (you know what I meant) and also know a few tricks to recognize them as soon as they enter the building. By the hotel rules, they can't go to the guest room after 9pm. But quite often our guest will pay for another room to make them official hotel guest so they can stay the night. The second surveillance is the Security team with camera in the lobby, the elevator and the corridors. They DO NOT spy on your room, but they do patrol the public area of the hotel. And just for your information, they have a much better way to recognize a “stranger” than us at the Reception. Normally, they will call us to inform that there's a stranger just enter the elevator or on the X floor, and ask us to gently, politely remind our guests about the hotel regulations.
