Do I Eat Out Too Much

How often do you go out to eat?

Some people on here.... so judgmental and childish, but anyways!

We go out to eat (normally) about one night a week. Be it fast food and take it home or a sit down restaurant. Here lately its been more like 2-3 nights because we just moved and got settled into our new house, my husband & I are exhausted from unpacking and organizing and I am pregnant! (First trimester so I dont feel so good - or up to cooking)

We are eating in tonight because I got a lot done today... I would say it depends on how the day goes usually and if I have a meal planned the day before!

Eating Out While On Diet?

grilled chicken sandwich, one slice of pizza w/ veggies, veggie sides from KFC (not mashed potatoes!). Salads w/o dressing or with low fat dressing. Personally I avoid food courts. I would get a skim latte (no flavorings or whipped cream) from a coffee place- the only calories are from the skim milk and it really fills me up while also tasting like a treat. Not advising this for everyday, just to control cravings at the food court. Good luck!

How often do you eat out or eat at home?

Well, I'm a college student so I can't really speak of my CURRENT situation, but back when I was home, we ordered pizza once per week and then probably went out to fast food (Subway usually) once per week as well. We only went out to actual sit-down restaurants a couple times a month.

However, I found that once I personally turned 16 and got my license, I started spending a TON of money on coffee drinks/snacks around town just for an excuse to leave lol!

I think that if you plan it right, cooking at home is much cheaper, but if you don't plan it, it's really not going to save that much. Cooking can get pretty expensive -- especially if you attempt extravagant recipes. Some tips?

-Start couponing and looking at ads.
-Plan meals so that you make them in larger quantities and have leftovers
-Make simple meals and get creative rather than follow exact recipes
-Make frequent trips to the store so that less food expires -- only buy what you need (especially watch this with produce/dairy products)

Also, if you go out to eat, avoid buying drinks/appetizers/dessert and you will save tons of money!

How is eating out often bad?

Its good for the economy and social life to eat out. Generally, every country where eating out has been facilitated by the government tax wise and were the city scene is supported by a large Horeca trade there also have been arguments made that every middle class family should have the money to go out 3 times a week. Eating out is not often linked to fast food, you don't go out specifically for a Burger King or McD unless you return from a party or a binge at 1 am in the morning. However, it comes down to the choice of the restaurant, but surprisingly  not the kind of money you want to spend. You can eat very well for 15 USD and very bad for 50 - 100 USD and vice versa. General storage, refrigeration, hygiene and turnover of the food can often be an issue. As a customer, we don't always see what goes on in the back of the kitchen since every half spoiled food can be reused and seasoned to be sold off instead of being thrown away. The line on what is good and bad can sometimes be very thin. Also, be aware of meals in a restaurant that are served within 10 minutes. Sometimes if you are lucky its fresh, but it could just as well have been prefabricated, frozen and reheated. These would be some of the issues that can cause trouble sometimes to your health and older people (who can be more sensitive) or people who are simply not used to it can experience everything from indigestion to diarrhea.  So in that sense, if you are not careful it can be bad for you."Eating out"meals at lunch are often more closer to normal home cooking and have a higher turnover with fresh food. Food does not have the time to go bad, since the restaurant wants to sell off everything before they prepare for evening service. As previous writers have indicated, the cost can generally be higher but its always a question of alternative cost and hence how you value your time.

Why do Americans eat out so much?

My parents spent some time living in America recently and told me that many Americans consider it a norm to eat out every day or almost every day. Why is this? Here in Ireland, eating out is generally for special occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) or an occasional treat. Some people here get take aways but never more than once a week. Why do people in the US prefer to eat out so often? It's certainly much more expensive and much more unhealthy.

Why do Americans eat out a lot?

American’s eat out a lot for a variety of reasons:On average we work more than most of the rest of the world does each week. We also commute longer. This gives us less free time to prepare our own food. Most families in America are supported by dual incomes — leaving no adult at home to prepare home-cooked meals during the day.Eating at restaurants is cheaper (in relation to income) in America than many other parts of the world — especially Europe.Eating at many restaurants is often a comparable cost to preparing a meal for yourself — at least for a single person. In some instances of fast food it is actually cheaper to eat out at a restaurant than it is to eat at home. Many low-income families find it cheaper to eat at a McDonalds a few nights a week than to prepare food from a grocery store. We have a staggering number of restaurants to dine at and usually a large variety to choose from. We have more variety than most other countries I have been to.Many American’s lack basic food-preparation skills. Many American’s are simply unable to cook for themselves. Some Americans live in ‘Food Deserts’ and are unable to purchase food from anywhere BUT a restaurant.Sometimes we just don’t want to do the dishes or go through the work of cooking. We can be lazy when we’re not working out butts off.… and I am sure I can come up with many more reasons if given the time.

Why do some people seem to eat out all the time?

I can't remember the last time I ate at home! Not exactly true, but I eat outside at least 5 times a week.I live in a place where going out for food is really easy (Beijing, China).Restaurants can start very very cheap here. And you can have great food for those prices. As a foreigner who does not know how to cook local food, you almost always need some imported ingredients in order to cook what you want and prices for home food go up pretty quick like that.I like cooking only when I host a dinner with friends. Don't really enjoy it for myself.I get to try a lot of different foods.I can almost always find friends who are willing to go out for dinner as well. It's more social.I have nothing like a family where I live, going out with people is great to maintain strong friendships that you can rely on.I know many (used to know a lot) restaurant / bar managers / owners and enjoy paying them a visit.Even for more expensive places, I used to earn enough money that it never was an issue. You're sure to have everything you want there. Never will you be in a restaurant and think "F**k, I forgot to buy us some beer" or "Oh! I only have one egg, I needed 3..." (convenience)Eating alone at home I don't take the time to properly seat down, and eat a correct meal. The dining experience is not there. I don't get a "pause" to eat, I'd be doing other things at the same time.

How often do families eat out?

“How often do families eat out?”Many factors influence whether, where and when a family might eat out.The area where they live. Some areas areas are more expensive than others. People living in cosmopolitan cities tend to eat out more often than their counterparts in smaller cities or towns. The size of the family. A family of two, both if whom are working can afford to eat out more often. My second husband and I ate out 5, 6 sometimes 7 days a week. We both worked, made good money and were just too tired to start cooking after a day of hard work. On the other hand, a family of four or five or more, with only one income can't really afford to eat out too often and may do so only once or twice a month, if that, and as a special treat. The financial well being of a family. At the high end, Los Angeles surveyors eat out the most frequently (5.2 times per week), while the country’s least frequent diners live in Boston at 3.8 times per week. The State of American Dining in 2016However, their survey didn't say whether they asked about eating out as a family or just asked individuals how often they eat out which could include lunch and snacks as well as dinner.NYMag reported that “…Over the past year [2016], as Matt Phillips reports on Quartz, Americans are spending more at bars and restaurants ($54.857 billion) than they are on groceries ($52.503 billion). It’s the first time it’s happened in recorded history. Huge Social Changes Mean That Americans Spend More on Dining Than GroceriesThough this doesn't indicate the frequency of dining out, nor an indication of the particulars of those taking the survey and whether the numbers reported reflect families eating out or singles, nor whether breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner are all included. An interesting question and I love to see a really detailed and comprehensive survey done on this.

Did you ever order dessert when you go out to eat?

Let's see you eat out and you have a nice meal, either in a fast food restaurant or a more slow food restaurant that has waiter service. And even slower restaurants, your waiter or waitress might ask you about dessert, and at that point, do you say yes, or ask to see their dessert menu and if something looks good to you order it, or if nothing looks good, do you pass, or do you say no right away. If you do order dessert how often would you estimate you order dessert, do you to it every time, or sometimes like maybe more of a special occasion, or do you rarely (if ever) order dessert?
