Do I Have A Hairline Fracture

Do I have a hairline fracture in my foot?

Yesterday I tripped and my foot kind of rolled under the other half of my foot. It hurt really bad but I was able to limp over to a bench. It's not swollen, it hurts alittle less today and I can put a tiny bit of pressure on it. The pain doesn't radiate, it just stays in one place and doesn't hurt very much as long as I don't touch that sore spot. Do I have a hairline fracture?

Do hairline fractures hurt?

They do. Depending on severity, they can be more painful than a clean fracture. The only area of bone that contains nerves is the outer shell, the periosteum. When a bone is damaged, that's what hurts. A hairline fracture still damages this. This is why you often hear that a bruised bone hurts worse than a fracture, more of the periosteum is involved in the injury.

Can hairline fractures be seen on an X-ray?

When you have an injury which is showing swelling, contusion type bruising, sensitive to pressure and weakness in support of the limb, the first diagnosis will be through an ultra sound to examine soft tissue and an X-ray, however depending on the swelling and time from injury, the significance and extent of the injury may not be fully evident, and radioactive dye Bone Scan called a CT Scan will be used to allow the potential fissure to become more apparent. If the injury is complicated by numbing, has impact on the central nervous system, or generally needs more clarity for possible surgery, an MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging will be taken.Know that a small hairline fracture or fissure is serious as it can expand if not taken proper care of.

How painful is a hairline fracture?

It can be as painful as a displaced fracture especially in children. My daughter managed to get one and would not bear weight on her foot. Initially reading of the radiograph was normal until the pediatric radiologist reviewed the film and made the call. Plain films are not always diagnostic. A special study such as MRI or bone scan might be necessary

How do you treat a hairline fracture in hand?

Considering that the fracture is undisplaced then plaster cast and RICE protocol (Rest, Immobilisation, Cold, Elevation of the affected limb). Follow ups and X-rays as administered by your physician. Healing times vary and tepend on the location and type of the fracture, age, sex, some diseases (e.g. osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis) and bad habits (smoking and alcoholism greatly delay fracture healing).

Could i have a hairline fracture in my hand? wrist?

Sorry about your getting hurt. My guess is also a hairline fracture, and there doesn't have to be swelling for that. My daughter did the same thing, and it only hurt when the Dr. touched the exact spot where it was broken.

I was a very BAD parent, because she did it right before we left for a trip to Disney World. They weren't sure if it was broken, and the Dr. gave her a temporary velcro on cast until we got back. She SWORE it didn't hurt, so by the end of the vacation, we were letting her on the wet rides and roller coasters without it. We got back from vacation, had another xray, and it was a hairline fracture... six weeks in a cast.

She did it falling exactly like you did, only she fell off her bike, put her hands forward to catch herself, and slapped the pavement. No swelling, no bruising. Just generally sore all over with one spot that was a little more sore than the rest but not enough to say it was definitely broken.

The pins and needles are scary thing... sounds like a pinched nerve or something. I'd get it looked at.

GOOD LUCK!

Why do hairline fractures hurt?

A hairline fracture (a crack in a bone so thin that it appears to be the size of a hair on an x-ray) hurts because the injury cracks through the periosteum (the outer layer of the bone) where the highest presence of nerve fibers exist with the bone, and therefore senses the most pain. Also, movement of the injured limb will sometimes move the fragments of the bone that are fractured, causing the open edges of the periosteum to rub against each other which causes even further pain.

Can bald people get a hairline fracture?

This question is too funny- how long do you take thinking up funny questions?

either way- the answer is yes- because baldness and fractures are two different things. Good try though!

How do you treat a hairline fracture in the thumb?

Definitely not by asking people on Quora.Orthopedics exist for a reason; ever heard of a doctor who specialized in Tail fractures?WHERE on the thumb is hairline fracture, HOW is the crack going (horizontal vs vertical). HOW close it is to any of the joints.. these all play uber pivotal role.It could be that if hairline crack way away from joints, you dont need to bother a lot. May be if the crack had to be very near to the joint, or at the joint itself, then it may require you to not move thumb at all for 6 weeks and take some other precautionary measures. Always rely on doctor and not a “jack of all biological trades, master of none” jacks like me.Make an appointment!Cheers
